“What's synchronized swimming?”

“Dummy, it's when you swim together,” Leon declared.

“Well, yes. That's it, but without the dummy part.”

The boys laughed.

“When are you going to start there?” Leon leaned in.

“By the fall. Hopefully.”

“Can you take me with you?” Brady asked.

I chuckled and looked up to meet their dad's eyes. They revealed nothing, but I guessed that was a no.

"Not yet, Brady," I said. "You're still too young. Maybe your dad will consider it when you get to a higher grade."

“Please, Dad. Can I go?” Brady asked.

“We'll talk about it when the time's right. Go and play. Violet and I need to talk.”

The boys gave me one last hug before running up the stairs.

“Kids! Don't run on the stairs.”

I turned toward the voice coming from the kitchen.

“The new nanny,” Shawn supplied.

“Oh.” I hadn't seen her yet and wasn't sure what else to say.

“You'll meet her later. Let's talk.” Shawn led the way to the study.

My skin prickled with the knowledge that I'd be alone with Shawn in a few moments. I wasn't scared of him. He wouldn't hurt me. I wasn't looking forward to his thoughts about everything that had transpired in the last few days.

Heart skipping, I walked into the study after him and shut the door.

“Sit.” He pointed to the chair opposite his.

I did as he asked. When he didn't speak, I started, “Shawn, I'm sorry for the trouble I caused. I was on my way here when I stopped for coffee and—”

“Violet, please.” His brows knitted. “It's not your fault. You have no reason to be sorry.”

"But you had to go through the trouble of having someone track me." It should've worried me that Shawn had the ability to do that, but he never did it just to follow me against my wishes. He did it to find me when I was in danger.

“It doesn't matter, Violet. As long as you're safe.”

I swallowed back my protest. He'd always made it clear he'd keep me safe, and he wanted to do so. Why couldn't my heart believe it?

“Violet.”

I looked up into his face.

“I want you to come back to the penthouse.”

“Come back?”

“Come live here,” he said.
