“I have to get this,” he said apologetically. “Give me a moment.”

I smiled and nodded as he left the restaurant. Just then, a waitress brought a drink to me.

“Oh, I didn't order anything,” I said.

“The gentleman did on your behalf.”

"Gentleman?" I followed her head nod to the man sitting two tables away. He winked, confirming what she said. "Um..." I turned back to the waitress. "No, thanks."

Before she could reply, a shadow fell over the table, and I turned to see the ‘gentleman’ standing over me.

“I'll handle this,” he said and directed the waitress to leave the drink. Once she had gone, he smiled. “What's your name?”

Who was this asshole? "None of your business. You can take your drink and leave."

“Not without your number.” His eyes ran from my face down to my chest before coming back up.

I fought the urge to slap this presumptuous jerk. “Dude, seriously, I'm with someone else. This is just weird. Please, leave.” I pushed the drink toward him. “I'm not interested.”

"Why are you playing hard to get? Just give me a number, and we can—"

“She said leave.”

I froze, and so did the douchebag. He turned and forced a chuckle. “Hey, man, I was just—”

“Get out.” Shawn stared the guy down, his blue eyes narrowed to dark slits.

I watched his hands ball into fists, ready to fight. "Shawn..." I whispered, but he barely glanced at me.

The guy pulled away, breaking the tension. "Alright," he said, putting his hands up.

“Taking your fucking drink with you,” Shawn spat.

He obeyed Shawn’s order and walked away, muttering under his breath. With him gone, Shawn turned his intense gaze on me, and my heart nearly stopped. I was about to point out I didn't invite the guy over when Shawn leaned in so close I could count each one of his long lashes.

“Are you alright?”

“I am,” I said quietly.

He lifted a hand, brushing away a stray hair from my cheek. “He won't bother you again.”

I’d never experienced anything more arousing in my entire life. I parted my lips, trying to think of something to say, but I could only manage to bite my lower lip. Shawn's eyes snagged on the motion, and a slight smile came across his face.

As he took his seat, he looked far more relaxed than when he’d almost busted the dude's jaw a few seconds ago. Meanwhile, I was a mess inside. My cheek still felt tingly from where his fingers had brushed, and apparently, Shawn's cologne was an aphrodisiac to my senses.

Thankfully, a waiter turned up to take our orders, and I didn't have to look into Shawn's eyes for the next few minutes. Our meals came out pretty fast, and I started eating, keeping my eyes glued to my plate. I was halfway done when laughter drew my eyes up. Shawn stared at me with a good-humored look on his face.

“What?” I said after swallowing a mouthful of salad.

He shrugged, still watching me.

Sitting back, I tried to eat more slowly, but damn, the food was amazing. I chewed, swallowed, and drained a glass of water. At first, I tried to distract myself, but now I needed a distraction from the plate.

“I'm glad you like it,” Shawn said.

“It's delicious.” I nodded.

“Why are you here, Violet?” Shawn's tone was heavy with meaning.
