“Another promise?”

Instead of answering me, he brushed his lips against mine. After the light kiss, he straightened back up and walked away.

“I’ll be back later.”

His words only made my anxiety spike more. He left the bedroom, and I stared at the closed door with my mind racing. Where the hell were they going? I grumbled under my breath, picking my book back up. But I couldn’t concentrate. I reread the same page ten times before giving up and tossing the book onto the mattress. Putting my arms behind my head, I stared at the ceiling, letting my thoughts wander.

I didn’t know how much time passed, but I immediately jumped off the bed when the lock suddenly clicked. I cursed under my breath as I scrambled for the dresser. I should have grabbed the stake right when Zan put it there. My fingers wrapped around the rough wood just as the door swung open. I planted my feet, going on the defensive, until I saw the vampire standing in the doorway.

My breath locked in my chest, panic taking over every part of me. Amaros shot me a vile smile before his eyes went to the stake in my hand. Behind him was the young-looking vampire. Jasper, if I remembered his name correctly. His eyes were cast downward, as if waiting for orders.

“Kali, I require your help tonight,” Amaros said, threat already in his voice. “You’re not going to try to fight me, are you?”

My mouth grew dry as I stared at him. We both knew that I couldn’t fight him. He was supposed to be with Zan tonight. Why was he here? Amaros waited only a few seconds before he strode forward and caught my arm.

“Stop,” I shrieked, struggling against his ironclad hold. The stake was still in my hand, but with how tightly he was holding my wrist, I couldn’t do anything with it.

“Screaming will do nothing to help you,” he said calmly as he dragged me from the room. “Don’t tire yourself out. We have a big night ahead of us.”

Chapter 35

Kali

I’d been in this truck for at least an hour, with a vampire on either side of me. Amaros was up front while Jasper drove. My leg bounced uncontrollably, and my heartbeat was going just as haywire. I couldn’t calm myself, no matter how hard I tried. I had no idea where they were taking me. They’d taken my stake before shoving me into this vehicle, and Amaros hadn’t spoken another word since he’d forced me from his house.

I was convinced he was going to kill me, and I was positive Zan had no idea where I was. It was taking everything in me to keep my fear hidden. But if I was going to die, I refused to show Amaros my terror.

After driving for a few more minutes, Jasper pulled off the dirt road and steered the truck into the brush. My pulse hammered harder when he finally parked and cut the engine. I couldn’t see much of my surroundings since it was pitch black outside. It was a cloudy night, so I couldn’t rely on the moonlight to see.

The vampire to my left opened the door and stepped out. I didn’t move a muscle, even when he motioned for me to follow. The one on my other side shoved me until I nearly fell out of the truck.

“Don’t touch me,” I hissed when I was grabbed and hauled the rest of the way out of the vehicle.

“Hands off her,” Amaros boomed as he got out.

The vampires followed his order immediately, but both stayed near me, as if I was going to run. Amaros sauntered closer until he was right in front of me. I raised my chin, meeting his cold stare.

“Here.” He handed me my stake, pressing it into my palm because I was too shocked to take it from him. “You’ll need this.”

“For what?” I asked stiffly.

“You’re going to help me.”

“No, I’m not.”

He raised an eyebrow. “You think you have a choice?”

“You can’t entrance me,” I snarled. “I will never help you.”

He leaned closer, his hand snaking behind me before he fisted my hair. “Did I imply that I need your willingness? No, Kali. You’ll do this whether you want to or not.”

His other hand went to my throat, and I bit back my cry when his nail suddenly sliced into my skin. Warm blood trickled down my neck, and panic engulfed me as I struggled to break free. The cut didn’t feel deep, but there were four vampires surrounding me while the wound bled freely.

“For some reason, your blood isn’t as enticing as other humans’,” Amaros murmured. “My son seems to be the only one who enjoys your scent. Which is another mystery.”

I glared at him. Was he expecting me to be insulted that vampires didn’t like my blood? I took that as a compliment.

“But these two are still young.” His eyes cut to the vampires on either side of me. “And they haven’t fed in days. They’re starving. Which means they can’t be picky when blood is offered to them.”
