“I’m sure they don’t want to hear about our squabble, darling,” I said through gritted teeth.

“Oh yeah, she’s mad at you.” Harry nodded. “The way she said darling makes me think she’s envisioning strangling you.”

“What happened?” Edith asked as she took a seat across from us. Harry sat next to his wife. “When we left earlier, you were as happy as two little magpies.”

“Our conversation was about starting our family,” Smoke said.

I grabbed my cup of coffee and took a swallow. There was a special place in hell for people who lied to cute old married couples.

“Is the problem about when you want to start your family?” Edith asked.

“I’m not ready,” I said. “I want it to be just the two of us for a little while.”

“And you don’t agree?” Edith looked at Smoke.

“Oh, I agreed,” Smoke lied easily. “The discussion is more about how many we want.”

Harry nodded. “I see. We have two. Two is a good number.”

I took another sip of my coffee.

“Two is a great number,” Smoke said. “But I like the idea of six.”

I choked on my drink and nearly spit it all over the table. Smoke pounded me on the back and I shot him a glare. He had the nerve to grin.

“Six is a lot,” Edith said. “How many do you want, Logan?”

“I hadn’t thought much about it,” I lied.

“I want a big family,” Smoke said, picking up the lie of the story. “I think it would be fun. Plus, Logan comes from a big family. It makes sense.”

“You’re not the one who has to be pregnant,” I snapped.

“So what do we do, Harry? Edith?”

“You compromise,” Edith said. “You settle on a number you’re both happy with.”

“What if one ends up being all I want?” I asked.

“Then we’ll have one.” Smoke shrugged. “Problem solved.”

“Glad we could help.” Edith beamed.

“You’ll make the right choice for you. Don’t listen to your parents or anyone else’s thoughts on the matter. It’s you two against the world,” Harry said.

Smoke caressed my cheek and stroked a thumb across the apple of it. “That’s exactly how I feel.”

“Kiss and make up,” Edith said with a grin.

Smoke leaned in and kissed me before pulling back, a happy smile across his face.

“You’ll be fine,” Harry said. “Okay, we’re seriously going to leave you two be.”

“Let’s exchange numbers,” Edith suggested. “I want to know when you start your family so I can knit you baby things.”

I am going to kill Smoke.

“That would be so sweet,” I said, completely defeated.
