“Still, I gotta scrub my skin.”

She got up from the couch and headed for the bedroom, taking her bottle of water with her. The door closed and then I was alone with Smoke.

“Uh, thanks for bailing us out,” I said.

Smoke let out a booming laugh. “I thought her going away party was going to be chill. She said something about staying in and watching rom-coms.”

“Change of plans,” I said. “Though we would’ve gotten into less trouble if we’d just done that.”

Never go out for a night on the town after you find out your fiancé is cheating. Bad decisions run amok.

“I can’t believe she leaves in a few days,” I said, wishing she didn’t have to go.

How was I supposed to get through life without her? She was my best friend, my entire support system. And now she was leaving Las Vegas to start a new job where she could live close to her father—the father that hadn’t been around for her childhood.

It felt like she was choosing him over me at the worst time in my life, but of course that was ridiculous. It wasn’t her fault Knox had cheated on me and that my entire life was in shambles because of it.

“So, what happened?” Smoke asked as he reached for the hotel phone.

“Why did you have to bail us out of jail, you mean?”

“Yeah.”

“Because we peed in an alleyway and I yelled at a cop.”

“Why did you yell at a cop?”

“Look, this is really embarrassing for me. Can I just pay you back the bail money and we forget about all this?” I asked.

“Don’t worry about the bail money.” He dialed room service and put in Tavy’s order. He looked at me. “You sure all you want is fries?”

“I’m sure.”

My stomach rumbled loud enough for him to hear.

“Double that order, please,” he said into the phone. “Thanks.” He set the phone back into its cradle and then leaned against the couch.

“The fries would’ve been enough,” I protested.

He shrugged. “Eat what you want, leave the rest.”

“How do you know how I like my meat cooked?” I demanded.

“Took a shot. You want me to call them back and have them cook all the flavor out of it?”

My mouth flickered with an incoming smile, but I tamped it down. “No. Your guess was correct.”

“So you’re giving me shit because…”

I sighed. “Because I’ve had a rough night.”

“You from here?” he asked.

“No.”

“You’re chatty.”

“My night sucked. I don’t feel like being chatty,” I clipped. “Thanks for the bail money, but maybe I should just go.”
