Tavy

Did it the night you told me he cheated.

I smiled. If I said the word, Tavy would ride into battle with me on horseback. She’d probably enjoy it, the blood thirsty savage.

“What’s got you smiling?” Smoke asked.

“Tavy,” I replied. “I asked her to block Knox and she told me she did it the night I told her I found out he was cheating.”

“She’s a good friend.”

“The best,” I insisted. “The best of the best.”

The best of the best, and yet here I was lusting after her father.

My elation immediately soured. “We better get back on the road, huh?”

“Probably,” Smoke agreed.

I finished off the last of my milkshake and chucked the cup into the garbage.

Relief curled through me when I realized I’d never have to talk to Knox again. Smoke was right—I’d done the actual hard part already. I’d left.

Telling my family and cancelling the wedding was the next order of business, but that could wait until I was settled in Waco.

It all sounded so exhausting that I let out a full-on groan.

“Don’t tell me you’re having regrets,” Smoke said as he climbed into the driver’s side of the truck.

“About talking to Knox? No. Not even a little bit.”

“Then what’s the groan for?”

“You ever cancel a wedding?”

“Can’t say that I have.”

“Well, I have to. Oh, shit, hold on.” I opened my phone and made a note. “Sorry, I don’t want to forget. I have a wedding dress fitting this week. I need to make sure I call them and tell them that my fiancé is a cheating piece of shit and that I no longer need the dress altered. Might as well make a day of it and cancel everything. The band, the photographer, the caterer, the hall…”

“You just said a lot of words.”

“Ignore me.”

“Kind of impossible to ignore you when you’re spiraling.”

“So, you could ignore me if I wasn’t spiraling?”

“Don’t think I could ignore you even then.” He put the truck into gear and we turned back onto the highway.

“Why are you so nice?” I demanded.

“I’m not nice.”

“No? Could’ve fooled me back there.” I gestured with my thumb to the drive-in spot as it disappeared in my side mirror.

“That was a fluke,” Smoke said.

“Not sure I believe you.”
