“Two queen-sized beds,” Dad said with a pointed look.

I rolled my eyes.

“Colt agreed it was an excellent idea,” Mom said. “His wife thought so too. She’s so sweet.”

“Mia? Sweet?” I snorted. “She’s great, but she can be awfully blunt at times.”

“They all really care about you,” Dad said, rubbing his beard. “The bikers and their wives, I mean.”

“How do you know that?”

He looked at me in confusion. “Because they’re all in the waiting room. And every time we see them, they ask how you’re feeling.”

Tears flooded my eyes.

The hospital door opened and Sharon came in. “Sorry to break up the party, but Logan needs to rest.”

“We’ll see you tomorrow,” Mom said. “Bright and early.”

“Not too early,” Dad said with a wink.

The hospital door shut and Sharon looked after them. “Nice family you got there.”

“Yeah. They’re the best.”

And then I thought about the people in waiting room. “The very best.”

Chapter 44

“Is he sleeping?” I asked Sharon.

She closed the blinds on my window so the parking lot lights wouldn’t shine through. “He’s awake.”

“Can I see him?”

“Visiting hours are over.”

“Please?” I begged. “I won’t stay long. I just need to see him. Ten minutes?”

I watched her expression waver until finally she nodded. “All right. I’ll take you to see him. But you both need your rest.”

Slowly, I swung my legs over the side of the bed and made a move to stand.

“What are you doing?” she demanded.

“Walking to Smoke’s room.”

“Sit.” She pointed to the bed. “You can barely make it to the bathroom on your own. I’m getting you a wheelchair.”

I smiled.

“What?” she demanded.

“You’re bossy. But really sweet.”

“Hush, now.” She grinned. “I’ll be right back.”

We had to pass the nurse’s station to get to Smoke’s room and there was another nurse on duty.
