He kissed me deeper, his tongue sweeping between my lips, obliterating any thoughts about the public setting.

Finally, he lifted his mouth from mine, but he didn’t release me. Smoke’s eyes glittered with desire and he smiled. “Hi.”

“Hi.” My voice was breathless and my cheeks heated. I hastily looked around to see if we’d made a scene, but everyone else was paying attention to their own food and conversation.

I took a seat opposite Smoke and set my purse down in the corner.

“You’re not that late,” he said with a wink. “You get caught up with something?”

A server walked by our table with a fresh, steaming pizza. The scent of pepperoni and mozzarella hit my nose and my stomach rumbled.

Smoke laughed. “Order first, then we talk.”

“That,” I said, pointing to the pizza. “I want one of those.”

“Done.”

After we’d ordered and Smoke was sipping on a pint of beer, I said, “I was at Willa’s, discussing my website design.”

“Your website?”

“Didn’t I tell you? I’ve officially decided to go into business for myself.”

“Hey, congratulations.” He lifted his beer and I raised my plastic cup of soda and we clinked.

“Yeah, I’m excited. Anyway. I was on my way out and got to talking to Waverly.”

“Willa’s younger sister?”

“Yeah. You know her?”

“Met her a few times,” he said. “She comes to the club barbecues with her friends and boyfriend.”

“Ah.” I nodded. “Anyway, we got to talking. She’s cool. Really cool.”

“Her boyfriend’s a good kid. According to Duke and Savage, at least. I can’t vouch for him.”

“He’s the kind of guy you’d hope your teenage daughter got involved with,” I said with a smile. “He’s crazy about Waverly.”

“Teen love,” Smoke said. “Nothing like it.”

“Nope.”

“So, am I forgiven?” He took my hand that rested on the table and linked his fingers through mine. “For this morning?”

“Yeah.” I snorted. “They weren’t even that surprised. Apparently, everyone knew there was something going on between us.”

“Someone’s always watching,” he joked.

I hastily looked around. “Then maybe we shouldn’t be out together in public. What if it gets back to Tavy before we get a chance to tell her?”

“Nobody except the club and their Old Ladies know we’re together. And Tavy’s work friends don’t run with the club. It’s fine. We’re off the hook. I can take you to dinner every night this week and she’ll be none the wiser.”

“Every night this week?” I asked. “We could just cook at my place.”

“We could do that too.” His eyes raked over me in hunger.

“Hmm, maybe dating outside the house is a good idea. Otherwise we might turn into sex fiends who don’t want to do anything else.”
