“Definitely. I’ll let him treat me to margs and guac to celebrate my new job. How’s the drive so far?”

I looked at the gas station that Smoke had disappeared into. The truck hadn’t needed fuel yet, but Smoke had wanted an energy drink. “So far, so good.”

“Where are you guys stopping for the night?”

“Not sure,” I admitted.

“How are you holding up?”

“Okay, I guess.”

“You talk to Knox?”

“For a bit. He called. I had to lie through my teeth and pretend to miss him. Left my ring on the nightstand, keyed his car, and poured cement down his pipes before I left though.”

“Oh man.” She sniggered. “What I wouldn’t give to see his reaction.”

“I’m glad I’ll be far away.” I sighed. “You think he’ll be more pissed that I left, or about his car?”

“Well, he really loves that car…”

“Yeah. I thought so.”

“Maybe I’ll treat you to margs and guac and we can have a proper deep-dive about this entire thing. We didn’t really get a chance last night before the bourbon hit our systems.”

The door to the gas station opened and Smoke came out carrying a plastic bag.

“I thought for sure our heavy meal would’ve soaked up all that bourbon, but I guess not.”

“We were doing shots,” she reminded me.

“Never again,” I said.

“You hungover?”

“No. Not really. I puked most of the alcohol up, remember?”

The door to the moving truck opened and Smoke set the plastic bag on the center seat. “Hold on, Tav.”

I held the cell out to Smoke.

He took it from me, our fingers touching. Electricity sparked in my fingertips and crackled up my entire arm.

I clenched my hands and set them in my lap.

Smoke didn’t take his eyes off me. “Hey. Raze pick you up and get you settled in the clubhouse yet?” He paused. “Good. Yeah. We’re probably gonna stop in a few hours. I’ll text you when we hunker down for the night. Yeah, love you too.” He hung up and handed me my phone.

He shut the door to the moving truck. “I got us a couple of snacks to hold us over until we stop for the night. You good with that?”

“Oh, sure,” I said. “We got a late start.”

“I’m fucking wiped,” Smoke admitted, cracking open an energy drink. I rummaged through the plastic bag and pulled out the candy bars.

“Didn’t know what you liked, so I got a medley,” he explained.

I smiled softly. “I see that.”

“Chocolate is medicinal and necessary to healing a broken heart.”
