“Someone probably noticed Kaylin was missing from the club,” Fia put in. “Otello disappeared out back on the phone.”

Wonderful. That left me with Lyndsey, and fuck, we didn’t have time for this.

“First, I’m going to start by telling you that you’re damn lucky because I’m here to explain what you’re getting into. See Maria? If you keep fucking around with her husband, that could be you in ten years. Isolated, miserable, being lied about by the man who manipulated you into a relationship. You still have time to get out. And that’s exactly what you’re going to do.”

“Who the hell do you think?—”

Oh, this one had backbone too. Cesare hadn’t broken her yet, so that job fell to me.

“Lyndsey, Lyndsey, Lyndsey. You love your family, don’t you? Your mom, your dad, your Grandma Reba. Tucker, Kenny, little Julia. You send them money every month. Take the bus back to visit whenever you have a few days off. How do you think your daddy would feel if he saw the video of you sucking a man’s cock? What would his congregation say? Redboro’s kinda conservative, isn’t it?”

Her jaw had dropped, and alarmingly, her grip on the child had loosened too. I grabbed him before he ended up on the floor, and hopefully, Nico had remembered to bring diapers because something didn’t smell so good.

“You can’t…”

“I can, and I will.”

“How…?”

“Ever heard of a nanny cam? Let this be a lesson: don’t fuck around with married men. He’s still wearing his wedding ring in the video, by the way, which is a nice touch. What’s your daddy’s view on sex out of wedlock? Isn’t ‘no adultery’ one of the Ten Commandments?”

Slater spoke in my ear. “Incoming, two minutes.”

“He told me they were only together because of Matty.”

Meh. That might even have been the truth.

“That’s what they all say, honey. Now, you’re going to wait two minutes, and then you’re going to call Cesare and tell him Maria picked up her son. And after that, you’re going to leave New York and find a new job. Babysitting isn’t a good career for you.”

“But…but…”

“Do I make myself clear?”

The fight went out of her. “Yes.”

Kaylin hurried back with a yipping Cricket securely zipped into the carrier, and I swapped the dog for the child. Four legs, I could handle. Two legs, not so much. I gave the mutt a little taste of Fia’s special medicine, and it flopped onto its side.

“Two minutes,” I reminded Lyndsey. “A second sooner, and Granny’s gonna need popcorn.”

And we were gonna need a miracle to get out of the building in time. Stairs or elevator… Stairs or elevator… The stairs would give us more options, but the elevator would get us out faster. I jabbed at the button.

“Gonna need help here,” I told my team.

“Understood.”

Kaylin seemed to understand the urgency of the situation, and she leapt into the elevator the second the doors opened. A moment later, we were heading for the lobby, and Serge had better not try my patience because I didn’t have much of it left.

“One minute,” Slater said.

And then I heard the glorious crunch of metal, followed by an opening door and my beautiful sister’s voice. Thanks, Ana.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. You just came from nowhere, and— Hey, where are you going?”

Slater provided an update. “They’re on foot now. Cesare and the bodyguard, but Cesare’s faster.”

The elevator opened into the lobby, and we ran outside. Black already had the rear door of the fake cab open, waiting. Serge only made it halfway out of his seat before Kaylin and I spilled onto the sidewalk.

“Into the car, now.”
