He’d failed her again.

“Who did you call?” Deck asked.

“A contact who works in security.”

“Who’s Kaylin?”

“Pretend you didn’t hear that part.”

“They sending reinforcements?”

“If there’s anyone in the area.”

“Which outfit?”

Nico glanced across at Deck and figured he owed the man that much. “Blackwood.”

Laughter wasn’t the reaction he’d expected. “Emmy Black?”

“You know her?”

“Know of her. You got Delta, you got DEVGRU, you got 24 STS, and then you got that crazy bitch.”

“You’re ex-military?”

“It was another life.”

“I didn’t realise they taught soldiers to drive like they were in Formula One.”

“They don’t. I used to race go-karts when I was a kid. Try to drive like this on a sunshine posting, and you’ll lose your suspension if you don’t hit an IED first.” Deck sucked in a breath as a deer poked its head out of the trees and quickly thought the better of crossing. “If Emmy Black’s on board, she’ll probably shut down the airport. That buys us time.”

“You think she can do that?”

“I once heard a rumour she conjured up a tornado, and I’m only fifty percent sure it wasn’t true. This could get nasty, you realise that? We got at least two men to deal with, and they have hostages.”

“Hostages, money, and political leverage.”

“Who is this guy? Her ex?”

“A Mob boss in New York City.”

“And you’re only telling me this now?”

“Nobody was intending for him to find her.”

“That’s what they all fucking— Aw, hell.”

Tyres screeched as Deck slammed on the brakes, and Nico flew forward into the seat belt. His gun ended up in the footwell, as did his phone, and only one of them survived the impact.

Deck already had a weapon in his hand. “Duck.”

Nico dove forward again as bullets zinged into the windshield. Deck leaned out and returned fire, three quick shots.

“They’re running.”

More shots, and then silence. Deck raised his head above the engine block again.

“You want the good news or the bad news?”
