Another cry that nearly broke his heart.

Trying hard not to jostle her, he headed up the stairs and into their bedroom, where he laid her on the bed. Then he rushed into the attached bathroom to grab her medication. She kept some up here and some in her handbag.

When he returned, he wasn’t surprised to see Mr. Fluffy sitting beside the bed, his head on the mattress as he stared at Millie. The only time the dog showed any signs of life was when Millie was in pain. The rest of the time, he was a lazy ball of fur.

Although he’d never known the dog to grab her handbag. Maybe he hadn’t. Perhaps Millie had picked it up, then collapsed before she could get her medication out.

“Baby doll, pills.” He sat on the bed, facing her. There was already a bottle of water on the nightstand.

“Noo,” she moaned as he drew her carefully up with his hand behind her head, supporting her.

“Yes,” he replied firmly. “You need these pills.”

“Noo.”

“Millie, do as Daddy says. Open your mouth.”

To his surprise, she actually parted her lips and he put the pills on her tongue, then helped her take a few sips of water.

“That’s Daddy’s good girl.” He laid her back down and then grabbed a blanket to place over her, tucking it around her.

Then he pulled all the curtains closed. Darkness and quiet was what she needed right now.

Closing the door to the hallway, he drew a chair over to the bed and sat on it, taking her wrist in his hand. He placed his fingers on her pulse.

Steady pulse.

Logically, he knew it was a migraine and that she would be all right. But he didn’t always operate on logic when it came to his girl. He had to make certain that she was well. That’s why he sometimes sat there, watching her breathe, monitoring her pulse.

Just to make sure that she was still with him.

Because she wasn’t ever allowed to leave him.

Spike wasn’t sure he could ever live without Millie.

“I’m okay,” she said in a pained voice. “Sorry I worried you.”

“Shh,” he told her. “You don’t need to worry about me. You need to be sleeping.”

“Love you.”

“I love you too, baby doll. Rest now. Daddy is here to take care of you.”

Millie felt like crap.

Pure and utter crap.

Opening her eyes, she stared straight into Mr. Fluffy’s face.

“Your breath stinks.”

“Woof.”

Awesome. Just what she needed. Some more air in her face.

“Still stinks,” she muttered.
