The little minx.

When he caught up, Jacob palmed Leilani’s bottom and whispered in her ear. “You’ll pay for that.”

“I hope so.” She smiled like a virgin bride.

He knew better.

A man opened the door of the Wallflower Hamptons Real Estate office. “Jacob?”

“Yes. Jacob Dufort,” he said, shaking the tall, slim man’s hand. “This is Leilani.”

He didn’t need to explain who she was. His arm was around her back, indicating a personal relationship, and it was none of his business. Still, he could’ve said she was a friend, but that felt...wrong.

“Jerry Wallflower. Nice to meet you both,” Jerry said, shaking Leilani’s hand. “So, another Dufort looking to lay down some roots in the Hamptons, huh?”

“A holiday home for now,” Jacob said, as Jerry pulled out his keys and led them to his black Mercedes.

“Well, I have three properties to show you today based on what you’ve told me,” Jerry said.

“Sorry to drag you away from any family activities today,” Leilani chimed as they climbed in.

Jerry started the car.

“Are you joking? I have three teenagers. You added about three years onto my life by giving me the day off.” Jerry laughed. “Look, I love those kids, but their days of fighting and bickering is way more than I can handle.”

They laughed appropriately, but he noticed Leilani glance out the window, as if unimpressed by his comment.

Again, he wondered where her father was.

Speaking of fathers, Jacob hadn’t had a chance to tell her about Ward Montgomery. With Knox turning up tomorrow, he needed to give her a heads up. If she had walked out during the conversation with Logan last night, Leilani wouldn’t have understood what they were talking about.

He'd invited her to the Hamptons as a shield of sorts, so she deserved to know why. And not be surprised by anything.

It went without saying if they were dating, and he was willing to take her away on a family vacation, she would know. So, there was also that.

First, they’d look at the houses.

Jacob was pretty serious about investing in a place in the Hamptons. Maybe it wasn’t right for his lifestyle. He’d soon get a feel for that today. Or perhaps he’d visit on his own and just enjoy some time staring at the ocean. Or invite a bunch of friends from his club life and have a debaucherous weekend.

Jacob glanced out the window, taking in the neighborhoods as they passed and wondered why that last idea didn’t sit right.

It should.

It was who he was.

And yet...not here, it wasn’t.

In any case, real estate was always an excellent investment, and he had a few extra zeros in the bank to do something with. The moment he saw Fletcher and Olivia’s home, he’d been struck with the need to have one of his own.

They arrived at house number one, and it was impressive. A ten thousand square feet, eight-bedroom property with a tennis court that was right on the beach.

They followed Jerry through the home, stopping by the floor-to-ceiling windows and looking out across the beach. Then they walked outside and stood on the tennis court.

“What do you think?” he asked.

Jacob glanced down at Leilani, who looked stupidly pretty today in her pale blue sundress and hair up in a ponytail, but he noticed she had her hands in her pockets.

She didn’t like it.
