Before they can question me further, my brothers reach us as well. They take the chairs on either side of me. All around us, the cafeteria is now buzzing with chatter and laughter and clinking utensils.

“You okay?” Anton asks, glancing at me from the corner of his eye as he picks up his knife and fork.

“Of course,” I lie, very convincingly too, while I watch the other two Hunter brothers saunter up to join Kaden at his table.

“Your food looks cold,” Mikhail comments as he narrows his eyes at me.

However, before he can say anything else, one of the first-years from my group approaches our table.

Dread surges through my stomach like ice water.

Mikhail shoots the guy a hard look, which makes him raise his hands in an appeasing gesture. But he keeps moving until he is standing next to my brother. With his back to the Hunters, he leans down and whispers something to Mikhail.

Rage and disbelief flash across Mikhail’s face as he snaps his gaze to me.

For the second time today, I consider whether I would be able to get away if I just cut and run right now.

The guy from my group gives my brother a nod and then quickly walks away while glancing over his shoulder to make sure that the Hunters didn’t notice that he just ratted Kaden out.

“Is it true?” Mikhail growls at me in Russian.

Anton and the twins abruptly stop eating and look between me and him.

“Is what true?” Anton asks, also in Russian.

Mikhail, sticking to that same language so that no one will be able to eavesdrop, gives them a brief but unfortunately very accurate summary of what happened in here before they all arrived.

Anton gapes at him for a second.

Then clothes rustle as all four of them turn to stare at me.

“Well?” Mikhail prompts, his voice tight with anger.

I squirm in my seat, caught between not wanting to admit it but knowing that they won’t believe me if I deny it.

“Yes,” I admit at last.

Long vicious curses cut through the air. A few people from the tables closest to ours turn to look. They don’t need to speak Russian to understand the sentiment behind what was just said.

“But it’s fine,” I try to assure my brothers and cousins. “He didn’t hurt me. And he just did it to get a reaction out of you.”

But none of them are listening.

Instead, all four of them are staring at Kaden like they want to bathe in his blood.

At the Hunters’ table, Jace says something to Kaden, who is still eating nonchalantly as if my entire family isn’t plotting his murder right now.

After Jace says something else, Kaden looks up from his plate and sets down his utensils. Then he twists so that he is facing our table fully. I can almost feel the hatred that is radiating from my brothers intensify until it’s vibrating in the air.

Kaden locks eyes with me, and a sadistic smile slowly spreads across his lips.

My heart jerks in my chest and heat floods my cheeks once more.

I quickly drop my gaze to the table.

Around me, my family shifts slightly in their seats so that they’re leaning closer to me. As if that can protect me from the psychopath a few tables away.

Mikhail is gripping his utensils so hard that his knuckles have turned white. I glance up in time to see him raise his knife and point it at Kaden in a very clear threat. Kaden only continues to watch us all with that spine-chilling glint in his eyes.
