Cassian crouched down in front of him. Finnian did well to keep his muscles loose, his expression blank—a talent he’d learned in his mother’s hall—as Cassian settled in his face. His gaze was ancient and endless as the sounds of the screams.

“Where. Is. It?” He demanded again.

Finnian’s eyes flickered to the two executioners, their menacing figures indiscernible in the dim light, before refocusing on Cassian. “Somewhere you will never find it.”

Cassian’s laughter lacked amusement as he scrutinized the defiant look in Finnian’s gaze. A smile stretched across the High God’s face, blossoming fear in the pit of Finnian’s stomach.

“Very well.” Cassian rose, simultaneously buttoning the jacket of his suit in a sophisticated way that irked Finnian. “I don’t mind playing.”

Ignoring Finnian, Cassian walked right through the seemingly impenetrable iron bars.

With bated breath, Finnian observed as Cassian twisted his head to an executioner.

“Make him scream.”
