Spit bubbled out of his mouth as he screamed when I reached out to touch him. “Back off, Chan. You had your chance, and I’m through.”

A dark, sinister look came over him, chilling my body. Ella stepped in beside me and moved a little in front of me, but with Blake becoming unhinged and making no sense, I didn’t want her caught in the crossfire. I had no clue what he was talking about, but before I questioned him, Ella had shoved Blake out of my doorway.

“Blake, you need to cool down. Get out of here before we call security.”

Blake glared at Ella and stepped forward with hatred in his one open eye, but a group of people started coming down the hallway and stared at him. Blake threw his hands in the air, turned, and limped away. I attempted to chase after him and ensure he got to the hospital, but Ella grabbed my arm and shook her head.

“Leave him be. Something’s not right with him. He needs to get his head together. Come on.”

Ella locked the door, entered my room after me, and gasped at the singed wall and floor.

“What happened?”

“Abel and I came here, and there was a little fire. Abel doused it, but now I’m waiting for maintenance to take care of it.”

“How are you so calm about it?”

“Honestly, Ella. I’m tired.”

Ella glanced over the destruction, shook her head, and told me to sit. Trying not to make a scene, I sat awkwardly, but she already had her attention in my drawer, getting me something to sleep in. It didn’t take long before she had me tucked into bed and I was out.

The following morning, I woke up and wanted to roll over and go back to sleep. I had a headache from all the crying and all the drama. I didn’t want to face the day. It didn’t help that I kept checking my phone into the early evening, wondering if Abel texted or called, but he never did. I texted him, and he read it but didn’t respond. He needed longer to cool off, so I left him alone.

Lying in bed for almost an hour, I thought about everything in my life and how it all turned out. At least now, the secrets with Abel went down by one, only for Blake’s freaking kiss. Abel would never know. He’d for sure kill him.

Coffee. This morning, I dreadfully needed coffee. I got the pot brewing when I spotted two notes by the front door. Ella’s door remained closed. She had a late night with me talking. It was good, but I’d make sure at least one of us got a good night’s sleep.

One note had smeared blood marks, and I had to hold it by the corners. It had to be from Blake, as it had no signature or anything. It only said I’m taking back what’s mine.

A chill like he’d induced last night curled along my spine. What the hell happened to him? He had gone completely over the edge.

Not knowing what to do with the paper, I chucked it, afraid of Abel finding it or Ella because she already proved she worried about me, and I didn’t want to add on anymore for her.

The other note was in an envelope, and when I opened it, a stock card invitation with embossed gold lettering had a formal invitation for a Secret Society meeting for tomorrow night. It listed an address I didn’t recognize. The paper invitation had to have cost a small fortune. I traced my fingers over the lettering.

Come on, Chan. What type of world are you getting involved in? Get out. Get out while you still can.

My mind warped into several scenarios of what could happen today, and I didn’t want to deal with them. After the coffee finished, I poured myself a cup, jumped in the shower, and dressed. I wanted to escape Malum King’s College, hide, and figure things out. It was too crowded here.

Abel was off the table. He needed his time as much as I did. Blake, hell no, obviously out of the question. Kailey didn’t know everything that was happening, and Ella hid in my dorm also so I didn’t have the place to myself. I wanted to be alone. I hadn’t been alone in a while, which I found strange since I’d spent most of my life alone and I didn’t like it.

The rest of my midterms were this week. I needed to focus on studying and making sure I nailed those tests. The town library was the perfect place to escape. I used it growing up. It had always been my haven. Why wouldn’t I do the same thing now?

Ella poured herself some coffee when I walked out of my room.

“Morning.”

“Morning. Sleep well?”

I shrugged. “Okay, I guess. You?”

“So much better here than with the roommate from hell.” She smiled as she took a healthy sip of coffee.

“Would you be able to give me a ride to the library in town? I want to head over there and study.” Get away from anybody who knew me or Abel.

Ella walked over to her purse, pulled out her keys, and tossed them over. I caught them before they hit the ground.

“Go for it. I don’t need it today.”
