RIVER

“You’re not my Alphas!”

Her words replay in my head as I storm out her front door with Landon close behind me.

We both fucked up.

Skylar’s scent, usually sweet and mouthwatering, has turned sour and it permeates my senses.

“That went well,” Landon remarks, his voice low. I’m grateful he’s the one to shut her front door, because if I did, I’m sure the fucking thing would fall off its hinges.

My hands tremble as I shoulder check him, stalking down Skylar’s driveway.

“Real mature, River.”

“Fuck you, asshole,” I hiss, turning to face him. My heart pounds in my chest, and I huff out a shaky breath.

I’m not getting enough air. My fingers tingle, and a chill races down my spine.

I’m fucking panicking.

Landon glares at me while crossing his arms over his chest. “If you hadn’t insisted on calling her missing friend a ghost, maybe we would still be inside right now.” He’s more angry than I’ve ever seen him, with that condescending asshole look on his face.

I’m going to murder him. I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. I’m going to kill him and Vincent for hurting her.

For making her hate me.

Hate us.

“Fuck!” I hiss, balling my hands into fists, willing them to stop shaking. My nails dig into the meat of my palms as I struggle to maintain my breathing.

“She needs space,” Landon continues. “We approached it wrong. We both messed up.”

“Like fuck I’m giving her space,” I snap. I don’t want him to see me like this. I’m about to lose my goddamned mind, and if I see a hint of pity in his eyes, I’m going to scream.

We can’t give her space. She’s in danger.

“I’ll talk to Ben about having Devyn stay with her,” Landon says. We’re both still in her driveway, and I’m having a hard time taking one more stop off her property.

I let out a shaky breath, staring at her front door. “That won’t be enough,” I reply. “Even if?—”

“And I’ll talk to Vincent?—”

“Fuck Vincent!” I yell, whipping my attention back to Landon. “He’s the reason we’re in the fucking mess, the motherfucker?—”

My hands won’t stop shaking. I can’t get enough air.

Fuck fuck fuck

Skylar’s scent haunts me. It’s tart and harsh, sourer than I’ve ever sensed it.

I can’t breathe.

I want to run back in there. I want to?—

“River,” Landon growls. “Take a walk.”
