“You said earlier that if there was a way of taking it all, it might kill me,” I said.“

“Right,” Thea said. “The dragon magic was so attached to her. Will it just leave her?”

Kaz nodded. “True, but this is different. It won’t be forceful. If this works as it should, the dragon magic will willingly leave you to go to the eggs.”

“And this would save her?” Almae asked, her tone hopeful.

“Hopefully, yes,” Kaz said. ”But it might still be painful, and I can’t guarantee anything. I’ve never seen or heard anything like this.”

I was dying anyway, wasn’t I? “Let’s do it.”

Kaz offered me his hand. I reached for him, but Shane grabbed my hand instead. He leaned into me. “Are you sure?”

I squeezed his hand. “It’ll work,” I said, believing it. It had to work. This was a big win-win. I didn’t die and there would be eight new dragons in a world where they were supposed to be extinct. “Have faith.”

He brought our joined hands to his lips and placed a soft kiss atop my hand, then he helped me go to Kaz. Kaz held my arm with a vice grip and guided me to the center of the eight eggs.

“Lie down,” he said, helping me to the ground. I lay on the cold, rough stone ground, and he gently picked up each egg and placed them around me, touching my legs and arms and waist. They vibrated and were oddly warm to the touch. Kaz faced everyone standing in the courtyard. “I’m not sure what will happen, just remember this is delicate. Please, be quiet, or if you can’t, leave before we start.” No one moved a muscle. Kaz looked back at me. “Do you remember how you took Paimon’s power?”

“Not really,” I confessed. “I was a little out of it at the time.”

“All right, then I’ll guide you through the process.” He knelt beside me and the eggs. “Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Think of the dragon magic inside of you and only that.”

I did as instructed. I could see the magic inside me, swirling through my organs, running through my veins, inside every cell. It had become a part of me as if I had been born with it.

“For now, focus on it,” Kaz continued. “Let it come to the surface, to your fingertips.”

Again, I followed his directions.

Instantly, my skin heated up. I heard gasps coming from my friends and family.

“Kaz, she’ll lose control again,” Almae said, worried.

“No, she won’t,” he said, almost too harsh. “She can do this.”

I inhaled deeply and trusted Kaz’s words. I could do this. I had to do this. “Keep going,” I whispered.

“Gently, slowly, send the dragon’s magic to the eggs,” he instructed. “The magic might sense the eggs and want to rush out. If that happens, don’t let it. Send it bit by bit. You don’t want to overwhelm them.”

I let out a long breath and imagined myself opening a faucet, just a little, so only a few drops could fall at a time. The dragon’s magic trickled from me to the eggs. Instantly, the eggs moved, shaking more than before.

“Focus,” Kaz said. “Don’t think about what they are doing. Just think about feeding the magic to them.” I wished it was that easy. With the eggs agitated and the tension around the courtyard, it was a miracle I still had a handle on the magic. “Keep going,” he continued. “Very slowly. It’s working.”

“How long will this take?” Shane whispered.

“A while,” Kaz said, irritated. “Raika, focus.”

Right. The magic, the eggs. I opened the faucet a tiny bit more and a few more drops of the dragon’s magic went to the eggs. I could feel it, the magic gladly leaving me, eager to go to the dragons, as if I had been the worst host it ever had.

I didn’t know how long had passed, but I stayed there, sprawled on the ground with the eggs for a long time as the dragon’s power drifted away from me.

“You’re doing well,” Kaz said. He was crouched somewhere near my head. “The eggs are growing, shining brighter. It’s working.”

That was a relief.

After a while, I felt it. The last of the dragon’s magic, the bit that was melded into me, mixed into my bones, my muscles, my blood. I coaxed it to the eggs, but it wouldn’t budge.

Come on!
