She waved me off. “You know you’re all my own children.” The ones she never had because her mate died. My heart squeezed. “I would do anything for you.” She frowned. “Even trade places with you, if I could.”

Meredith shook her head. “You already asked, and I said it’s impossible.”

I gawked. Rue had asked that? The nerve! As if I would agree to something so ridiculous.

I looked beyond them and the empty bed there caught my attention. “Where’s Ariella?”

Shane sighed. “She left.”

“What? How? Wasn’t she hurt?”

“She wouldn’t let me examine her,” Meredith said, sounding upset about it. “She woke up and left.”

Kaz frowned. “First she lost her wings, now she lost her powers.”

Shit, that was horrible. “I can’t imagine what she’s feeling right now.”

“I understand the will to leave and hide,” Kaz said, as if speaking from experience. We didn’t know much about him and I didn’t think we would.

Maybe she needed some time to accept the reality of it, but after a few days, someone needed to check on her. This could be affecting her a lot more than it seemed.

Meredith patted my arm. “All right, dear, you should rest.”

“True,” Shane agreed.

I wouldn’t argue with that. I lay back and closed my eyes. “Please talk to Thea. I want to get out of here.”

“Will do,” Meredith said.

I held Shane’s hand and without opening my eyes, I said, “You should take Minsi and Tyren from here. They don’t need to see me like this.”

He leaned closer and whispered, “They want to be with you until …” He clamped his mouth, not saying the words none of us wanted to hear—until I died.

Since I didn’t have much time left, here they were. My heart clenched and tears burned behind my closed eyelids. I heard footsteps retreating, probably Meredith going to talk to Thea about moving me to a safer place.

Then the door opened and someone rushed in.

I opened my eyes as Killian glided to my bed, but his gaze was locked on Kaz. He saw me awake and spared me a glance. “Hey, you seem to be feeling better.”

Hardly. “I am,” I lied.

“Sorry, but this is kind of urgent.” He turned back to Kaz. “Lyra is back from the goblins’ mountain.”

Kaz frowned. “And?”

“She and Etyx brought back dragon eggs.”

Kaz’s eyes widened so big, I thought they would swallow his entire face. “Dragon eggs?”

Killian nodded. “At least, that’s what they think they are.”

Kaz ran out of the room and Killian followed him.

I inhaled sharply. “The dragon was female. She had been imprisoned for so long while about to lay eggs.” That was so freaking cruel. “When she got free, she found her babies’ a nest.” The mountain.
