A Huddyriuns kicked Norah in the chest and the powerful beast sent her flying back. She fell like a heap of dirt at Paimon’s feet. Paimon didn’t hesitate. He grabbed Norah by the throat and threw her like a fly—directly into the portal.

“Norah!” Cain shouted. He zipped after her.

The portal closed.

I growled, finishing off the demon I had been fighting, and tried turning back to Paimon. Three more demons jumped over me, staving off my efforts.

What the fuck?

Paimon yelled, “Enough!”

He brought his hands up, creating a round shield of dragon magic around him, Kaz, Ariella, Raika, and Tyren.

I rushed toward it, but the shield held, and I bounced back. It was like hitting a concrete wall.

“That is enough,” Paimon said with a snarl.

Kaz lunged at him, but he threw several darts of darkfire at him. Kaz tried maneuvering out of the way, but a few darts went through his wings and one hit his chest. He went down with a cry.

Ariella sent her light magic at Paimon, but he created a darkfire shield, and let them explode. Then he sent the shield toward the fallen angel. Ariella jumped out of the way and right into Paimon’s hands. He wrapped her in darkfire and grabbed her head with both hands.

“Now, your magic will be mine,” he said.

“No!” Raika yelled. She cast a huge dragon magic bolt and threw it at Paimon’s side. He clambered, but didn’t lose his grip on Ariella. The angel fought against his hold, but her light magic floated from her face to his, and she was visibly weakening.

Raika attacked again and then Tyren jumped on Paimon’s back. He bit down on Paimon’s shoulder. The demon hollered and shook his body, until Tyren fell back. He kicked Tyren in the ribs. My brother whined as he tried to get up.

Raika rushed Paimon. She shoved her hands at his face. He blinked, confused—I was too, what the hell was she doing? The demon finally let go of Ariella, and the angel fell to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

Paimon screamed as Raika retreated a few steps. He wiped at his face. “What the hell is this?”

“The elixir and the medicine that inhibit the dragon magic,” she said. Her hands dripped blood. She had broken the vial in his face! “The thing is, I trained to be able to call my magic even after having taken the elixirs. You haven’t.”

She threw a big bolt of both darkfire and dragon magic at Paimon.

He fell back and I jumped up in the air. Yes!

The barrier around them sparked, but held. It wouldn’t last long, though.

A demon tackled me and I lost sight of their fight. When I killed the demon and looked again, I saw figures made of both darkfire and dragon magic surrounding Paimon. He strained to get a hold of his magic, but couldn’t. The dragon’s magic flickered in his hands, then went off. He fought against the figures, mostly with punches and kicks.

Raika glanced at me and the others. “Everyone, step back!”

I frowned.

Then she shifted. Remember the witch’s circle? she asked in my mind. The shield will fall and you need to make sure our friends are out of range.

Out of range? For what?

For this.

Flames covered her fur and I gasped. This woman didn’t cease to amaze me.

She lunged at Paimon, taking him down. The barrier fell. I hesitated for two seconds, then remembered what she said.

Push everyone back, away from the witch’s circle, I told my wolves.

I ran to Tyren, helped him up, and walked with him until he was outside the hidden witch’s circle. Then I went back for Ariella. For a second, I thought Paimon had killed her, but I could hear her slow heartbeat and ragged breathing. I bit down on the corner of her sleeve and pulled her outside the circle. Kaz dragged himself back and tackled a demon, even though he was hurt and weak.
