Tyren frowned. “You’re sick?”

Raika looked at me and I let out a long sigh. She continued, “It’s more than that. The dragon magic is draining my energy and literally consuming me.”

Tyren went rigid. “What does that mean?”

Tears sprang to Raika’s eyes. “I’m dying.”

Tyren shook his head vehemently, his hands closed into fists.

Minsi went pale. She opened her mouth in a big O, but no sound came out.

Raika reached for Minsi. “Breathe, pretty girl. You need to breathe.” She breathed in and out, but Minsi didn’t do it with her.

Instead, she screamed.

This time, I clamped my ears. But only for two seconds. Then I rushed to her and embraced her tightly. “I’m here,” I whispered in ear. “I’m here for you. I won’t let you go through this alone.”

Then Raika’s arm went around Minsi and me, and then Tyren’s.

“I’m sorry about this,” Raika whispered, her voice breaking.

Minsi started wailing, but Raika averted what seemed the beginning of a panic attack. She lay down in Minsi’s bed with her, while Tyren and I sat on the floor beside the bed. With tears in her eyes, Rue appeared by the door and watched over us.

At least for now, we were all together.

It took a while, but Shane and I went back to the castle. We were quiet on the way, each of us lost in our own thoughts—and I planned on something.

As soon as we entered our suite, I pressed his chest until he was seated at the edge of the bed.

“What’s going on?” he asked.

“Just … stay here. I’ll be right back.

I ran into the closet and changed; I hadn’t planned on this until a few minutes ago, but now that it was on my mind, I couldn’t ignore it. This could be one of my last nights with Shane. I wanted it to be special.

After changing, I drank the elixir and took one of the tablets—this should help.

I walked out of the closet, wearing a black silk robe that went down to my knees.

Shane frowned. “Oh-kay.”

I sat down beside him, feeling good, bold, and naughty. “Shane, I want you to make love to me.”

His eyes rounded. “But—”

“Not buts.” I scooted closer to him, until my knees touched his. “Just go with it.”

Sucking a sharp breath, Shane slid his hand up my legs. I leaned back on the bed and he came with me, crawling over me. He pressed his body down on mine and his mouth to mine. I parted my lips and let him in. Kissing him was just too good, too hot. His taste, his tongue, the way his lips fit mine … so perfect.

He glided his hands under my robe, but then I broke the kiss and pushed him away.

“What the …?”

“Relax.” I stood, a wicked smiled on my lips. “Relax and enjoy.” I untied the robe and let it fall down to the floor, revealing red lace lingerie.
