“First, Rotgar needs to report to me,” Paimon said.

Rotgar’s lip curled. “The Whitecrest and the Ironfang are attacking Shane and his friends as we speak.”

The blood rushed from my face. “What?”

“I was there personally.” Rotgar sounded proud. “I’ve brought them all together, poked them, and let them loose.” He shrugged. “I just came back.” He handed Paimon the portal key.

With a smile, Paimon placed the key on the inside pocket of his suit, just above his dead heart. “Isn’t that good news?”

No, they were the worst. Rotgar had led Shane into an ambush … and now I was in another one. We both had fallen into this mess.

Paimon drank the rest of his whiskey, then threw the glass over the ledge. We never heard the glass breaking.

“All right, if you’re so eager to die.” His lips turned up. “Ivy, you’re first.” He reached for her.

Ivy stepped back, but the demons pushed her forward. Paimon walked to her. She struggled, but went still when he closed his hand around her neck.

Paimon inhaled deeply and her eyes widened.

Shit. It was now or never.

I didn’t think; I acted.

As fast as I could, I called my magic. I threw a wave of darkfire toward the demons and Huddyriuns, going around the room and taking them down like dominos—most fell from the ledge to the abyss. Their screams echoed through the cavern.

Then, I created a wall of dragon magic between Ivy and Paimon. He hissed when the wall closed around his wrists and he pulled back. His eyes turned red, but before he could retaliate, I pushed the wall to him. It hit him and exploded, making him stumble back.

I lunged at him, grabbing the collar of his suit and shoving him down. “Now, Ivy!”

She jumped into action and conjured darkfire cuffs around his wrists and ankles. We knew that wouldn’t hold him long. Two seconds later, dragon magic burst from Paimon. It hit me hard, taking my breath away. I fell back on the rough stone, pain spreading over my back.

Groaning, I rolled to the side.

“You, insolent bitch,” he snarled, looking at me. Ivy threw darkfire at him. That made him look at her. “You too.”

The handful of demons who remained at the ledge were getting up from their daze, and I didn’t have much time to act. Rotgar was one of them.

I pushed to my feet. “Hey!”

Paimon stopped and looked at me. Ivy rushed to my side. “I promise you one thing: you won’t win.”

The key in my hand glowed green—I had snatched it from Paimon when I tackled him to the ground—and a portal appeared behind Ivy and me. We ran.

“No!” Paimon screamed.

Ivy and I jumped through the portal. My feet barely touched the ground when something yanked at my head, pulling me back. I yelped. Paimon had grabbed my hair.

“Come back here!”

Half of his arm was through the portal, the other half was still back in the other realm. With his other hand, he took the key from me and tugged me to come with him.

I kicked him in the chest. At first, he held on to my hair, and I screamed as pain spread through my head, but then he let go. He fell back into the portal.

It closed.

I fell to my knees, breathing hard. We had made it. I had rescued Ivy and now we were back on Earth, back at the motel—it had happened so fast, that was the first place that had come to mind.

Ivy crouched beside me. “Are you okay?”
