I studied him carefully as he paced in front of the room. He was arrogant, but he moved in a calculated manner. He chose his words carefully, though he sometimes slipped up and said things like your coven. No one else seemed to notice he didn’t belong here, though.

Professor Leto excused the class. I hurried toward the door, but I was one of the last to leave.

“Lucas,” Professor Leto called before I could make a break for it.

My blood ran cold, but I composed myself before turning to him. “Yes, Professor?”

He folded his hands and waited patiently before the other students left the room. Oliver’s fur stood on end, and the door remained open. At least I had a quick escape if I needed it.

“What did you think of my lecture?” he asked. “Interesting, yes?”

“Sure, if you’re a necromancer,” I said. I didn’t know why he cared about my opinion. It wasn’t like he needed validation from me. His ego was bigger than Octavia Falls.

“Ah, but you’re no necromancer,” he said calmly. “I saw the way you watched me during class. You seemed… engrossed in the lecture.”

He was goading me, like he wanted me to admit to something, though I didn’t know what.

“Perhaps you could lecture on reaper powers in the future,” I suggested coolly. “Seeing as you seem to know more about my magic than I do.”

He’d known I could read energy signatures before I did. I wondered what else he knew.

Professor Leto took a step forward. He wore a cunning smirk and eyed me up and down. “What a pleasure that would be. There’s so much you don’t know. But perhaps I’ll keep these things to myself. After all, what use would my secrets be if my enemies knew them as well?”

“Enemies?” I cocked an eyebrow, and sarcasm dripped from my tone. “I thought we were just becoming friends.”

Leto scoffed. “We could be, but I know what you think of me.”

He began to circle me. He was so close now; we were nearly touching. But I didn’t flinch. I was more pissed than anything.

“I see your hesitation each time you enter my class,” he taunted. “I smell your fear whenever I approach. I sense your longing to scream.”

“You killed Professor Perez,” I snapped.

Most people would act shocked by such an accusation, but Professor Leto stopped in front of me and chuckled. “Prove it.”

I narrowed my eyes. “I don’t know how you did it, but I know you’ve done it before, and you’ll do it again. Why are you here?”

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“I meant at the school,” I growled. “Whatever the priestesses promised you is nothing more than empty promises.”

He laughed. “You have no idea what you’re talking about. Are you suggesting I change my loyalty and make a deal with you?”

I almost snorted. “Like I’d ever be so stupid. I’m warning you to leave. You won’t kill anyone else before I’m done with you.”

He smiled, like this was nothing more than a friendly chat. “I like your confidence.”

I shrugged. “Confidence is easy when you know you’re going to win.”

I couldn’t say that for sure, but it sure as hell felt good to say out loud.

Leto eyed me up and down. “Then tell me, Lucas. How will you win? How exactly are you going to stop me?”

“What use would my secrets be if my enemies knew them as well?” I repeated his words back to him.

He was practically grinning now, clearly amused. “As far as enemies go, I like you, Lucas. Perhaps under different circumstances, we could be allies. You say you’re not stupid enough to make a deal with me, but you’re clearly stupid enough to make an enemy out of me.”

The smile quickly fell from his face. His expressionless features gave me the chills.
