Nadine nodded. “Sounds easy enough.”

Talia reached for me on one side and Grant on the other. Nadine set her sage bundle aside, and we all joined hands. Silence fell over the room as Talia concentrated on her crystal ball. I closed my eyes and sent positive, encouraging vibes her way. It was hard, because I was still shaken by everything that happened. I took deep breaths to try to calm myself.

After a few minutes where nothing happened, Talia shifted.

“Is it working?” Grant asked.

She shook her head. “Not yet. I need to focus better… I need music. Do you guys mind if I sing?”

“Not at all,” I said. “Do whatever you need to.”

Talia closed her eyes again, and her melodic voice filled the room. I’d never heard the lyrics before, and I realized it was because she was making them up on the spot.

“Goddess of the coven

Be with us now

We must stop what’s coming

We don’t know how

Danger lurks these halls

Death is all around

What magic has caused this?

The answers must be found.”

I felt Talia stiffen, and I opened my eyes to see her staring deep into the crystal ball. Something in her features had shifted, like she wasn’t in the room with us anymore. The ball began to glow a bright white. I wasn’t a Seer, so I couldn’t make out whatever Talia saw—but hell, I felt the spell working.

A strange wind began to swirl around us. Nadine and I shot nervous glances around the room, as if expecting a ghost to appear. Talia was so deep in her trance that she didn’t seem to notice.

“Should we stop?” Grant asked, sounding worried.

“No, let her keep going,” I said. “She’s getting something—”

A gust swept through the room and whipped our hair in all directions. The candles blew out, and Talia gasped.

She dropped my hand and shrank into Grant. He placed an arm around her shoulder, and she cuddled into him, squeezing her eyes shut tightly.

“Tal!” He shook her a bit. “What’d you see?”

She winced. “It was confusing.”

Grant stroked her hair. “Take all the time you need.”

Nadine quickly conjured a water bottle. “Here.”

Talia opened her eyes and sipped the water. “Thank you.”

After a few deep breaths, she finally relaxed. “I can’t really explain what I saw. It was more like a feeling. Lucas was right. The demon is definitely involved, but I can’t decipher the details. All I know for certain is that this wasn’t another demon deal. He used some sort of spell to kill Professor Perez.”

“What kind of spell?” I asked.

She took another sip of water. “I’m not sure, but it felt like something that could be broken—like a curse, but not a curse. Once a curse is cast, it’s out there for good. You can’t undo it. This is different. He has more control over the spell, like he chooses how and when to use it.”

“A curse that’s not a curse…” Nadine mused. “What if he’s marking people for death and controlling their fate?”
