Nadine started for the door. “We have to get out of here and stop this!”

I grabbed her wrist to stop her. “What are you going to do? Turn yourself in?”

“I have to distract them, at least!” Nadine cried. “I can’t let everyone inside the school die for me—”

Another spell blasted into the school, and the window shattered, spraying glass all over the room. I pulled Nadine into my chest and curled my arms around her so she wouldn’t get hurt. The mob was closer to breaking through the wards, and the school could come down on us at any moment.

Nadine pulled away from me. “If they want me, they can come and get me!”

She turned toward the window. She was going to show her face and make them stop to save us all… but she stopped dead in her tracks. The window was gone.

The frame was still there, but behind it, the night sky had vanished, and the mob had disappeared. In its place was nothing but a brick wall. Nadine placed her palm on the brick and pushed hard, as if to test if it was real.

“What the hell’s going on?” Grant asked.

Isa sniffed the brick wall, then pawed at it like it was a doorway she wanted to be on the other side of it.

Nadine whirled back toward us. “Their spell trapped us in.”

Charlotte wore an incredulous look. She’d obviously never seen anything like this. “That’s not possible.”

“It’s got to be Mentalists, messing with our heads,” Chloe theorized. “Or Fae illusion artifacts someone got their hands on.”

“Does it matter what’s causing it?” Grant demanded. “I say we find a way out of here!”

Grant darted for the door and opened it. What we saw made my stomach drop. Instead of opening the door to the hallway, we looked straight into a classroom.

“There’s supposed to be a hallway there!” Grant panicked.

Before anyone could respond, another crash sounded overhead, and the room shook so hard that the door slammed shut. Once the room steadied, Grant swung open the door again, but the classroom was gone. Instead, we looked out into the Main Foyer. Screams echoed throughout the school, and heavy footsteps sounded down the hall. Doors slammed, and students sprinted past the grand staircase.

“Get to the main doors!” Nadine instructed, pointing to the large double doors on the other side of the Main Foyer.

I scooped up Oliver at my feet, and we all took off running toward the main doors. We had to get the mob to stand down, or the whole school would be destroyed.

The seven of us sprinted out of the room, our cats following closely behind us. I reached the main doors first, and I yanked them open. I expected to walk straight into the mob, but instead, I found myself staring into one of the school’s meditation rooms. Across the room were two windows, and outside of them stood the forest behind the school. I rushed over to the nearest window and threw it open.

“Everyone outside!” I barked.

The others followed me. I took Nadine’s hand and helped her through the window. Isa followed closely behind. As I turned to help Talia through, my heart leapt. Nadine stood in front of the second window, glancing around like she didn’t know where she was at.

“I don’t know what happened!” she cried.

What the hell? I ducked my head through the window, and instead of seeing the forest outside, I saw the same room we were standing in, only from a different angle.

Grant threw his hand over his mouth. “Your head’s there, but your ass is over there!”

He pointed to my face, then toward the other window. I craned my neck, and sure as hell, I could see myself leaning through the window.

My heart raced. This was freaking me the hell out.

I quickly ducked my head back into the room. “We have to gather as many people as we can. If we’re stronger than the mob, we can overpower whatever spell they’re using to fuck with our heads.”

Nadine shook her head. “This isn’t a Mentalist spell. I can feel the magic in the walls of the school. Their attack is literally hurting the school. The space-bending spells can’t hold.”

“Can’t hold—?” I nearly choked. We had to get out of here.

“Lucas, tell me you can portal us out!” Grant begged.
