“I had to get Everly’s herbs. I found this while I was searching for them. Do you want to wear it?”

“Sure…” I said in uncertainty. Lucas was acting weird.

“Here, let me help.” Lucas bent to one knee, and I steadied myself against the wall as he helped me slip into the brace. I giggled, because it tickled when he touched the back of my leg. He must’ve liked getting a reaction out of me, because he purposely tickled me harder. Heat pooled between my thighs, and I suddenly wasn’t tired anymore.

It should feel weird to laugh at a time like this, but we had one last night together before our verdict was read. It seemed appropriate to make the most of every moment we had left. Some people might be turned off at the threat of death, but I was a witch. We kind of had a thing for death. If anything, it only made every touch hotter and made me desire him more. If we were going to die, I would make the most of our last night together.

The brace fit snugly around my knee, and the pressure helped dull the ache. Lucas paused for a long moment. He had this deeply contemplative look on his face, and his hand shook as he reached for his pocket. Definitely weird. I hoped he hadn’t gotten hexed or something.

“Everything okay?”

His gaze snapped up to mine. “Just tired.”

He leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on my knee, then stood. “Let’s get somewhere—”

The sound of footsteps cut him off. We both went rigid. Usually, no one was out of their dorms this time of night. We thought it was safe to walk back to our rooms alone, but if we ran into the wrong person, we were in trouble.

Lucas grabbed my hand and pulled me down the hall. He opened the first door we found—a red door I hadn’t ever noticed before. It must’ve been a supply closet or something, because it certainly didn’t lead to any classrooms I’d been in. We slipped inside the dark room, and Lucas quickly shut the door behind us. After a few beats, it became obvious no one was following us. He opened the door a crack to peek down the hall, and he breathed a heavy sigh.

“It was just Verla. She’s probably headed to the library to prepare for our trial. We can…” He trailed off when he turned to me. Lucas dropped the door handle, and the door swung shut, clicking behind him. Darkness enveloped us from all angles.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Do you have any idea where we are?”

“Um, no. It’s pretty dark,” I said flatly.

Lucas searched for the light switch on the wall, and a few moments later, the lights clicked on. The room filled with a soft, orange glow. Quiet music began to play on speakers overhead, and twinkling lights reflected off the walls. I turned around and gasped at what I saw.

This room didn’t look like it belonged inside the school. It was so unlike our dorm rooms, more like an executive suite in a five-star resort. The room was huge, with a large heart-shaped bed in the center and twinkling lights strung above it. Nearby, a whirlpool tub sat filled to the top with steaming water, looking warm and welcoming. Rose petals floated on the surface. A faint floral scent filled my nose, relaxing me instantly.

“This room definitely wasn’t here before. What is this place?” I couldn’t help but walk across the room and run my fingers over the red silk sheets on the bed. This had to be a fae illusion or something. It was too perfect. I mean, I’d just been thinking about giving Lucas the night of his life, and then this room appeared?

“It’s the Presidential Suite,” Lucas said. “It’s an enchanted room that moves around the school and appears when you need some… alone time. Students enchanted it ages ago, to hide it from the staff.”

I sat down on the bed, continuing to run my fingers over the soft silk. It was definitely real. “So this is all for us?”

“That’s how the enchantment works,” he said.

“That’s awfully convenient, considering the things I was just thinking about you.”

Lucas smirked. “And here I thought I was the one who conjured this room.”

“Perhaps we both did,” I said. “I know it’s weird considering the circumstances, but with everything going on, I don’t want to waste a moment with you.”

“I feel the same way,” Lucas said as he sat beside me.

He took my hands in his, and I swore looking into his green eyes had never felt so good. Maybe it was this room, or maybe it was the desperate times we were living in, but my whole body shivered at his proximity. It honestly didn’t matter if we made love tonight. All I wanted to do was fall asleep in his arms, because being close to him was the best part of this human experience.

Lucas reached up and pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. “There’s so much I want to say to you, and so much I don’t know how to say. If we don’t make it—”

“If we don’t make it, we’ll be together again,” I interrupted. “If we go down, we go down together.”

Lucas gave a light smile. “That’s a good way to look at our impending doom.”

“I have a gift for staying positive in the worst of circumstances,” I teased. Didn’t mean I wasn’t scared, though.

Lucas’s gaze roamed my face, looking deeply contemplative. “I don’t know how you do it—how you manage to stay positive. It’s something I really love and admire about you.”
