“Left it to us,” Verla finished for her. “Despite William’s death, the house is still available to The Coven’s Shield. You can’t still be against using it.”

“I just don’t see how we can fight if we leave,” Nadine said. “I won’t give up.”

Verla wore an incredulous look. “Sometimes you need to come up for air, Nadine. Staying here is going to get you killed!”

“Verla’s right,” I said, stepping into the kitchen.

Nadine’s gaze darted toward me. It was the first time she noticed me. My stomach twisted at the sight of bruises all over her face. Helena’s healing teas were good, but not that good. It’d take a few days for her to heal.

“The coven is ready to hang us,” I said. “We have to make adjustments.”

Nadine hesitated, but I could see the defeat written all over her face. “Everly’s in no condition to travel.”

“We’ll leave in the morning, when she wakes,” I suggested.

“We need to leave as soon as possible,” Verla argued.

“We need more than an hour to recover,” I said. “We’re not leaving without everyone. We still need to go back to school for our friends, as well as our cats. I’m not leaving Oliver and Isa behind.”

Verla sighed. She could clearly see I wasn’t going to budge on the matter. “Fine. We’ll leave in the morning. In the meantime, I have a guest room that your friends refused. You’re both welcome to it.”

Nadine stood. “Thank you. For everything.”

Verla smiled kindly. “You’re welcome.”

She led us to the guest bedroom, and we both collapsed onto the bed. I curled Nadine in my arms and pressed my nose into her hair. Inhaling her scent calmed me more than a magical potion ever could. We fell asleep soundlessly.

When I woke the next morning, I was feeling a little better, but I wasn’t a hundred percent. The potion Helena had brewed into the tea helped speed up healing, but witch magic could only do so much. I was still sore and tender everywhere, but my headache had gone away.

Nadine stirred from beside me, and she winced when she rolled over. I drew away from her quickly, afraid I’d hurt her.

“You’re fine,” she told me, pulling me closer. “It’s just my knee. It twinges when I move.”

I hated seeing Nadine in pain. “If I knew who messed up your knee, I’d pound his face in.”

Nadine sighed. “There was no knowing who’s responsible. There were too many people.”

“And I blame each and every one of them.”

“Karma will deal with them.” Nadine winced as she sat up.

“You should rest,” I protested.

“I want to check on everyone.” Nadine wasn’t taking no for an answer.

I helped her downstairs, and we heard voices coming from the bedroom. I followed the sound and found that Everly was awake. Everyone was gathered around her bedside.

Helena peeled back the dressing on Everly’s leg. “The wound is infected.”

“We need to get her to a doctor,” Talia demanded.

Everly shook her head weakly. A fever had spread over her, making her face sheen with sweat. “The doctors aren’t going to help me.”

“We’ll take you out of town,” Grant suggested. “There are other hospitals.”

“I was hit by a spell—some sort of curse,” Everly said. “There’s magic inside my system infecting the bone. Human doctors can’t fix this.”

“I can.” Nadine hobbled into the room, and everyone moved aside to let Nadine through. She knelt at the bedside and placed her hand in Everly’s. I watched on curiously, waiting for her magic to work… but nothing happened.
