“Good idea,” Lucas agreed

“To keep our operation secret, I can find a spell that will ward off this whole hallway,” Mandy offered. “We’ve got something the priestesses don’t have. We have all five Casts on our side, which makes us stronger.”

“Mandy is right,” I said. “She’ll find a spell that will work. Lucas can print an article to get people on our side. Does anyone else have things they’d like to help with?”

“I’d like to work on finding ways to grow our powers,” Chloe offered. “Most of us lost our magic the night of the Burning, and we didn’t get it back for a few days. If the Waning hits us that way again, in a critical moment like that, it could make all the difference. This war would literally come down to chance.”

“What are your ideas?” I wondered.

“Crystals, for starters,” Chloe said. “I know magically-infused crystals are banned on school grounds, but if this room is warded, we can store them here.”

“We’d have to learn transference,” Lucas said. “It’s advanced magic.”

“If we hope to have any chance against the priestesses, we need to get on their level,” Chloe said. “Advanced magic or not, we need to learn transference, so we have magic available to us if the Waning hits.”

Transference was the power to transfer magic into crystals. Those crystals could then be used as reservoirs, like batteries for our magic. I could perform transference with ease, because of my Cast abilities, but only the most talented witches from other Casts could accomplish it. Even other races had difficulty with it.

“I can help,” I offered. “I should be able to transfer your magic into a crystal.”

Chloe nodded firmly. “That’s the best place to start. And… I want to start learning blood magic.”

“Blood magic?” Mandy asked warily.

“It’s powerful,” Chloe said. “You can use magic in blood to boost your powers and perform spells you’ve never dreamed of.”

“I know what blood magic is,” Mandy said. “I also know it’s dangerous.”

“We need to take risks,” Chloe insisted.

“And how exactly are you going to source blood ethically?” Mandy asked. “How do we use it without hurting anyone? Besides, if the coven finds out we’re using blood magic, it’s over. No one will convert to our side. We’ll be burned at the stake without question.”

“Mandy’s right,” I said. “No matter how powerful it is, it’s going to hurt us.”

Chloe frowned. She didn’t have to like it, but Mandy made a valid point. There were lines we couldn’t cross, and this was one of them.

Miles swung his feet, bouncing his heels off the cabinet below the counter. “In the meantime, I can go undercover with Miriam’s Executors. I’ll join and see what information I can get from the inside.”

Grant shook his head. “You’re my brother. They’re not going to take you.”

“We could stage a public fight,” Miles suggested. “It shouldn’t be hard to convince people I’ve disowned you. Remember that time I convinced Mom you broke my arm?”

“It was pretty convincing,” Grant admitted. “All right. We can stage a fight.”

“Grant and I can work on finding information about the next Wand,” Talia said. “We know there’s one in the school. Internship applications are open with Professor Richards, and he maintains the school’s history records. We might be able to get some information in the school’s archives that could point to its location.”

I knew it was my turn to make an offer. My throat closed up, but I forced myself to speak. “I want to contribute in every way I can, but I also want to be very honest about what I can handle. I have dialysis three times per week, and that’s extremely time consuming. My life literally depends on it, unless I manage to get a kidney transplant. Lucas is a match, but the priestesses have blocked the surgery from happening. It’d be a miracle if I made it to the top of the transplant list anytime soon. Working around my dialysis is going to be a little difficult, but I’m going to do my best.”

“Then how about you focus on something you can do during dialysis?” Lucas suggested. “You’re a priestess, which means your intuition should be growing stronger. You can work on honing that power, and maybe we’ll learn something about where to go next.”

I nodded. “I can do that. There’s one more thing. Who can dig into coven history and learn about demons who have visited the coven before? We need to get more information about the warning we received.”

“I can,” Mandy offered.

“I can help,” Chloe added.

Mandy crossed her arms and scoffed. “I’m not working with her.”

“Bitch, you did not just say that,” Chloe snapped.
