“Let us walk.” Coatl waved a hand in front of them. “Shall we?”

“Are you walking me to my death?” Orion asked.

Coatl smiled, the kind of smile that reminded Orion of a snake about to strike. “If I wanted you dead, you would have never left here the first time.”

“Then you’re toying with me like a cat plays with a mouse before it devours the rodent.” Orion shook his head. “I’m not into games. If you’re going to kill me, be done with it.”

Not that Orion had a death wish. But if he was going to die, he’d rather get it over with then spend another second in Coatl’s presence, listening to the bullshit the guy spewed.

“I will remind you once more that my patience isn’t infinite. My manners may be lacking, but so are yours. Your host has invited you for a walk. Be polite and accept the invitation.”

It was as if Orion was channeling his mom’s temper as it burst free. “My host? You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m not a guest. I was kidnapped and forced here. You can shove your invitation up your ass.”

Orion spun so fast that he nearly tripped over his own feet. He made it about twenty yards before he was lifted into the air, and then he was yanked back to Coatl. “I really did want your company, but you’ve forced my hand, human. You just couldn’t accept my invitation at face value.”

With his limbs waving around like one of those wacky inflatable tube men, Orion clutched at thin air, desperate to be put down. A moment later, he was thrown to the ground like a ragdoll. Pain exploded once more, but this time Coatl didn’t heal him.

“Writhe on the ground like the vermin that you are,” Coatl snarled. “I gave you a chance. Why did you have to be so difficult?”

“Because you’re every bit the monster Jaden claims you are,” Orion gritted out, in too much pain to get back up.

Coatl roared with rage, tossing Orion back into the air, leaving him suspended as the creature stalked toward him. “I was not deceiving you. I just wanted someone to talk to. Now you’ll be just as much a prisoner as I am, only I’m going to feed off of everyone you love, growing in strength as all the people you care for the most die.” He drew so close that Orion felt Coatl’s breath on his face. “And when I’m finished destroying all you hold dear, I will break free of this retched place and force you at my side while I rain down death and destruction to this planet. You will witness my unparalleled powers, knowing you caused the end of your precious world just because you thought you were too good for a simple conversation.”

Orion tried to apologize, even if he didn’t mean it, but Coatl had once again stolen his voice.

“You shall never speak again,” Coatl said, his features a mask of insanity. “Your voice is now a bane to me.”

If only Orion had played along, buying himself time until he could find a way to escape. His temper and smart mouth had just sentenced mankind to their deaths.

Chapter Twelve

“You lied!” Duncan shouted at Jaden who was standing in the living room. “How in the fuck was Orion pulled back there? You said the shield would prevent the Slayer from detecting us!”

Jaden worked his jaw from side to side. “To fill you in on a little secret, I was the definition of insanity with a side of world destruction at one point. Although my mate has somewhat tamed me, I’m not so far removed from my past that I won’t obliterate you if you don’t check your goddamn tone.”

“Are you fucking for real right now?” Duncan stormed toward Jaden with a look that said he was about to do some serious damage. Izel intercepted his mate, stopping his cheetah from really pissing off Death and ceasing to exist.

“You really don’t want to do that,” Izel whispered to Duncan.

“You’re taking his side?” Duncan looked incredulously at Izel, but there was also pain in his dark gray eyes.

“No, but I’m already a reaper. I can withstand more than you.” Izel wasn’t sure about that statement, but he would be the one ready to kill Jaden if something happened to Duncan.

He turned, glaring at his boss. “Send me to Orion.”

“So you can die?” Jaden asked. “Wasn’t once enough for you?”

“Orion is by himself, helpless, and scared out of his mind. He is human, Jaden. He stands less of a chance than I do.” If Jaden didn’t send him, Izel would find another way to break into the Slayer’s cell. There was no way in hell he was going to stand there and debate the subject while Orion fought for his life. “I am Izel, son of Djimon. I come from a long line of warriors. Although my father betrayed me, I am still a formidable weapon.”

“I didn’t say I wouldn’t help,” Jaden replied. “I only told your mate to police his fucking tone.”

Duncan snarled, as did his siblings.

If Izel didn’t get a handle on this situation, there would be four dead cats in the living room. “Tell me your plan, Duncan.”

“Go in while in beast mode,” Duncan said to Izel. “I don’t give a rat’s ass how powerful this Slayer is. He has our mate, and I’ll kill everything and everyone who stands in my way in order to get to Orion.”

“Commendable, but not at all plausible,” Jaden said. “Panahasi should be here shortly, and he might have a secret weapon that could possibly take the Slayer down.”
