“Sweet. Do you want me to bring anything?” Orion knew who Beckett was, as well as Cormac. He’d met the two in the hospital. Santee had said something about two more brothers, but Orion hadn’t met them.

“I’m crazy about your mom’s cooking, but today, just bring yourself,” Santee said. “I can’t wait until you get here.”

Orion glanced around, still feeling as if someone was in the room with him. Maybe he would ask Santee about the feeling when he saw him.

“Tell him not to get here too fast,” Orion said. “I need a quick shower.”

“You have twenty minutes to get ready,” Santee stated. “See you when you get here.”

Before Orion could protest the short amount of time he’d been given to get ready, Santee had already hung up.

“Whoever you are, leave me alone,” Orion said to the empty room. “I’ve had enough excitement to last me a lifetime.”

He felt foolish speaking to no one, but that damn feeling wouldn’t leave him as he showered then dressed before he went outside to wait.

Something brushed Orion’s nape. He jumped, glancing around just as Beckett pulled into his driveway. Orion hauled ass. Then he stopped.

“What’s wrong?” Beckett asked when he stepped out of the pickup.

Orion looked over his shoulder, and he could have sworn he saw someone standing there. It must have been some kind of trick from the sunlight, because, when he blinked, the figure was gone.

“Orion?”

Turning his attention back to Beckett, Orion asked, “Can someone from your world be near you without you seeing them?”

Beckett’s features darkened. “Demons.”

“Did you just say demons?” Orion wasn’t sure how to process that. He’d just learned about shifters three days ago. Now demons? Really?

Beckett nodded. “Their corporal form can fade in sunlight, if they want it to.”

Holy shit. Orion was about to wet himself. “I think someone was in my house. I didn’t see anyone. I just felt a presence.”

“Where’s your mom?” Beckett asked, looking around.

“She left.” Orion omitted the part where she’d taken off, pissed at him for not staying home. He didn’t want to have to explain her behavior or why he was defying her. Paloma Keplin had a fiery temper, but she’d never aimed it at him, until today. He also knew she was just trying to look out for him.

“Get into my truck.” Beckett looked around. “I’ll let Sheriff Harper know what’s going on so he can send someone by later to check on your mom in case she returns.”

“What if I’m wrong?” Orion doubted his mom would be back any time soon. It was bingo night.

“Always listen to your gut,” Beckett said.

“Don’t call the sheriff,” Orion said. “I think I’m just spooked after what Marvell did to me.”

Beckett looked as if he didn’t believe him but nodded. “Let me know if you keep having that feeling.”

“I will.” Orion hopped into the truck and quickly closed the door, staring at his house as if whatever he’d seen, or thought he’d seen, would show itself. Maybe Orion really was losing his mind.

Chapter Two

Orion felt a tad better when they pulled up to a gorgeous house. This was where Santee lived now? It was a lot better than where his friend used to live. Hell, it was better than where Orion lived, though he’d never say that to his mom because he didn’t want her to think he was ungrateful for all her hard work and sacrifice.

Beckett got out then circled the hood, as if he was about to open Orion’s door, but Orion shoved his door open, jumping out. “How long before the steaks are ready? I’m starving.”

“About an hour,” Beckett said. “Duncan didn’t even have the grill fired up before I left to get you.”

Orion wondered if Santee would feed him snacks while they waited for dinner. He wasn’t joking about starving. So far today, he hadn’t eaten, and now he was ready to devour some food.
