“About the burger?” She gave him a confused smile.

He shook his head. “About this. About us.” He gestured around the living area of the suite, which was full of Delilah’s things. Shoes by the door, coloring on the table. She’d even left her socks on the floor.

“I’ve never been more certain of anything,” she told him.

The tightness in his chest felt different this time. Not painful. More like something in there was being mended. Fused.

Coming together, the way it was supposed to. He had another person in his heart now.

And she was there to stay.

He walked over and dropped to his knees in front of where she was sitting, pulling her forward until their lips met. “I’ve missed you so damn much.”

“Then stop sending me away,” she murmured.

“I’ve stopped,” he promised. “It’s not happening again.”

And then words disappeared because they needed this kiss. It was more than a reconnection, it was a promise.

I promise I won’t be an idiot again.

I promise I won’t listen to you if you are.

They didn’t need words, when their mouths connected like this.

He pushed the hair from her face, kissing her jaw, her cheek, her brow. “It’s not going to be easy, you know that?”

“I’ve been dating you for a while. Long enough to know you’re not an easy man.” Her gaze was soft. “But nothing worth fighting for is ever easy. I love you and I love Delilah. That’s all that matters. Everything else will have to wait.”

His breath caught. “We love you so much.”

“Then come here,” she whispered, pulling his mouth back to hers.

So he did. And it was heaven.

Chapter

Thirty

“Oh my god, that man sure does clean up well,” Gemma whispered to her, as the two of them watched Presley climb out of the Beast and walk over to the dance hall.

Cassie’s heart pounded against her chest. It had been two weeks since she’d come home, and they’d spent most of their free time together – with Delilah. On Sunday they’d gone to church together and then to dinner with his family, and Delilah had been her little shadow.

They’d agreed that they should still live apart for a while. Get Delilah used to having Cassie around before they decided what to do next. But it felt like they were traveling the journey together – one that would end with them all living together.

It was exciting and comforting all at once. She loved it.

“Hi.” He smiled at them both as he walked through the door. “You ready?”

“Yes. But where are we going?” she asked him. He’d asked if he could pick her up right from work, since it was her late night. She’d managed to finish her class and jump in the shower before he’d arrived.

He’d told her to dress casually, but that was such a man-type instruction. What did that mean anyway? Jeans? Sweats? In the end, she’d chosen a little dress embroidered with flowers, plus some cowboy boots and a denim jacket.

And now she was glad she’d made an effort, because her man was looking fine. He must have stopped at home from the new renovation he was working on over in the next town, because he’d changed out of his work jeans and engineer boots into a pair of dark navy pants and a blue shirt, that brought out the color of his eyes. His hair, like hers, was damp.

They both worked jobs that required energy. And a shower in the evening. She liked that he’d dressed up for her.

“Yeah, where are you going?” Gemma asked, grinning at him. “We’ve been trying to guess all day.”
