“We gotta think this through,” Viper said. “The only way to end this is to draw him out. Can I see that please?” he asked me with his hand out.

I gave the phone to him.

“I say we reply to this. How about…” He began to type with his thumbs, and then raised his voice an octave, trying to sound female. “Don’t threaten me, you asshole! You kidnapped me! I’m not working for you again.”

Everyone laughed.

“Yes, that’s exactly what I would have replied with,” Devon said with a small chuckle.

“It’s just gonna piss him off, but at least he’ll know you got the messages,” Viper said, hitting send.

The phone chimed a few seconds later. He read it aloud. “Yes, you will. You owe us for calling the feds.” Viper chuckled and typed a reply as he recited it in the girl voice. “I don’t owe you shit.” He hit send and it chimed again immediately. He read the message and smiled. “Looks like this dick is changing his tune. He says, ‘Fine, you cunt. Name your price but you will pay for what you did to my men.’” He looked at Devon. “What do you charge for something like this?”

She lifted a shoulder and let it fall. “I’ve only built simple websites and charge about a thousand for those. Tell him ten grand.” She smirked. “Those fuckers are loaded.”

He typed out a response and tapped send.

When a reply didn’t come back right away, he handed the phone to Devon. “Let me know immediately if he responds.”

“I will,” she said. “But you do know I’m not doing that, right?”

“Of course you’re not. We’re just tricking him.” I pulled her to me and kissed the top of her head. “Don’t worry, nobody’s going to harm you. This place is tightly guarded, and Bloome’s working on a protection spell, too. I’m glad we got your stuff from the apartment since those assholes know where you live.”

“Yeah, good call,” Viper said.

The phone pinged in her hand. She read the text aloud: “Fine, you’ll get the 10k once the job is complete. Start working on that shit now, bitch. You have one week, Rocky.” She looked at us. “What should I do?”

I had an idea. “Tell them you’re not starting without a two-thousand-dollar deposit. I might be able to trace this guy from the account. How were they paying you before?”

“Cash App,” she said.

“Okay, tell him to use the same account for the deposit. I’ll try to trace it.”

She nodded and replied to the text.

“Good one,” Shadow said.

The phone made a different noise. Devon looked down at it and grinned. “Deposit made.”

“Let’s go,” I said, grabbing her hand. “You’ll need to log into Cash App from the computer.”

She rolled her eyes. “Duh, I know that.”

“Then why haven’t you ever tried to trace them when they were paying you before?” I asked.

Devon shrugged. “Because I didn’t care who they were. They paid me consistently, and I didn’t ask any questions.”

“Fair enough.”

Chapter 25

Playground Confessions

Devon

Six days later, my stress level was through the roof. I was getting multiple texts a day asking for updates on the site. I lied through my teeth, assuring him that I was working hard on it, all the while Parker was reassuring me that we’d be okay. We had to be patient. Spending every day wrapped up in his arms in the safety of his apartment helped to calm my anxiety and gave me hope that once this was over, we could try to have something together. Something normal and amazing.

The trace had been a dead end. They had their stuff protected pretty well, both the Cash App and the phone in general. It was also a prepaid cell with no name registered and we couldn’t trace the location the texts were sent from.
