“That sounds like a lot of work,” she commented.

“It is, and if you help me, it means a lot of sleepless days to get it back up and running. I’m not ready to do that yet, though.”

She sat in the chair. “Hey, didn’t Rocky say she put something on the system so the malware couldn’t get back in?”

“I thought so,” I muttered, annoyed. “Obviously didn’t work.”

Jemini asked, “What can I do?”

“Well, let’s teach you how to hack into NOPD’s computer system. See what they got on the kidnapping of those girls.”

She turned her head to the side. “I thought BSI was handling that.”

“They are,” I said. “But Viper told me to keep on top of it. No harm in being in step, or hell, even one step ahead of the cops.”

Her green eyes sparkled with mischief as she set the mug down and pulled up a chair next to me. “Let’s do it.”

Chapter 6

There’s Something About Rocky

I huffed at the computer screen. “That’s it, I’m scrapping the whole system.”

“No, don’t,” Jemini said. “Let’s see if that Rocky girl can help us again.”

We stared at the spyware that had wormed its way in again. I was about to snap. “I’m gonna find whoever’s doing this and fold their teeth back with my fist.”

Jemini laid a restraining hand on my arm. “Just let’s get this taken care of then you can go on your mission of violence.” She pulled out her phone and hit a button. “Hi, it’s Jemini from the Nighthawks.” Pause. “How are you, Rocky?” Pause. “Good, thanks. We need some more help. Can you come to our clubhouse and give us a hand?” Pause. “Yeah, more malware.” Pause. “Sounds good, thanks.” She ended the call and then tapped the screen some more.

“She’ll be here in ten minutes. I just texted her the address.”

“Let me make sure Viper’s cool with a stranger coming here,” I said, getting up and heading toward the clubhouse.

“Boss, a word?” I said when I saw him standing at the door that led to the garage. He was talking to a prospect.

“You got it, boss,” Paz said, then disappeared into the garage with a red oil rag in his hand.

“What’s up?” Viper asked.

I sighed. I hated feeling like such a failure, but this problem was bigger than my ego at this point. “I can’t get rid of the malware. It keeps coming back. Jemini’s called in that hacker who helped us. You cool if she meets us here?”

He looked at me for a few long seconds. “Yes, but we’re gonna shake her down before she comes inside.”

“Cool. She’ll be here in ten.” I walked off before I’d have to ask for forgiveness since I hadn’t asked for permission ahead of time.

A few minutes later, the doorbell buzzed throughout the space, and Jemini, Viper, Phoenix, and I headed to the door. I opened it, and those haunted green eyes were the first thing that greeted me beneath the darkness of her hood. “Come in,” I said.

“Rocky, this is Viper and Phoenix. You know Jemini.”

She nodded shyly. “Hi.” I saw her eye the wolf with immediate fear.

“That’s Venom. He won’t bite. In fact, he’ll be human here in a few hours.”

“O…kay,” she said.

“Nice to meet you. Now please lower the hood and put your arms out in a T,” Viper said.

Her eyes went wide. “Why?”
