Despite myself, I think about it. My mom was into that nonsense. I picture her sitting around our kitchen table with Aunt Sasha and Grandmother Mary, the three of them having their “charts” read.

It was all a load of crap.

No one predicted my mother’s watery death.

But Lindy’s looking at me with her beautiful face, hopeful I’ll answer. I don’t know why I feel the need to appease her, but I try to think back.

What did Mom say I was?

I think of my mother’s laughing eyes. “Stubborn as a bull,” she’d said to me.

A bull…

“Taurus,” I say. “Why do you ask?”

She sinks back against her seat with a sigh of relief. “Oh good. I mean, it’s not good that you’re a Taurus, no offense, that means you’re stubborn as heck, but I can see that without knowing your birthday—”

I cut her off. “Why is that good?”

“Because I’m a Virgo.” She blinks at me.

“And?”

“And so even if I were to say yes to your crazy proposal, which I’m not going to—”

“You’ve already said that.” I tip back the rest of my drink.

“Just being honest. Anyway, if you’re a Taurus and I’m a Virgo, nothing will happen between us.” She gives a definitive nod, happy with the conclusion she’s come up with. “We’re one hundred percent incompatible.”

The idea of her thinking of us as incompatible grates over my nerves. I run my hand over the skin at the back of my neck. “Why would anything happen between us, anyway?”

“Oh!” Realizing the implication of what she just said, she quickly shakes her head. “It wouldn’t. I didn’t mean that we would like, end up together or anything.” She looks down at her hands, busying herself with removing invisible lint. “Although, we did… um… just… you know, just now.”

“Yes, I fucked you after I punished you, then I asked you to fake a relationship. But something real?” I shake my head. “That’s never going to happen.”

She stares at me for a moment, clouds gathering in her gaze. Her words come back with a bite. “Why wouldn’t something happen? Do you find me unattractive?”

She has no idea how gorgeous she is, does she?

“You’re beautiful. I’ve told you that.” Many times. “Beautiful and feisty.”

“Feisty?” Her nose crinkles. “Is that a compliment?”

“It is in my world. Women must be strong and be able to kick ass when necessary. But women who think for themselves don’t normally allow the stars to make decisions for them.”

“I’m not from your world,” she says. “Where I come from, feisty means…” Her words trail off as if she’s gotten lost in a memory for a moment. Then she says, “Anyway, I’m not in your world.”

“You are now. You dragged yourself into it whether you meant to or not. You’re a smart girl. I have a feeling you meant to.” I eye her, waiting for a response.

She offers none, suddenly interested in the dim lights over our heads.

I continue, wanting a confession from her. “You don’t just wander onto the jet of a strange man unless you’re trying to get something from him.”

“Is that so?” She finally looks at me.

“Money grabber? Ex-girlfriend of a brother turned stalker?” I add the last one as carelessly as the first two. “Journalist?”

I’ve struck a nerve. She looks away. She leans her head on the window, closing her eyes with a yawn. “Mind if we get some sleep now? I’m exhausted.”
