“Did you talk to Claire last night?” he asked.

“Yeah. I talked to her. I told her I never wanted to see her again.”

“What?” Christian’s brows furrowed. “Why would you do that?”

“Because she hid the truth from me and only used me to get to you guys.”

“Did she come out and say that?”

“No. She said she wasn’t, but I know she was. The first time we slept together was the night I told her I knew you.I’m done with the lies and secrets, Christian. She had plenty of opportunity to tell me who she really was.”

“Jesus Christ.” He ran his hand through his hair. “This is all my fault.”

“No, it’s not. It’s hers,” I said.

“But I told you because I assumed you knew.” Christian sighed.

“Exactly!” I pointed at him. “I should have known, but she chose to keep it a secret. After what happened with Katrina, I swore I was done. Then I met Claire, and she changed that for me. I was a fool for getting involved with her in the first place. This time, I’m done.”

“Come on, Nick. Don’t say that shit.”

“I’m serious, Christian. I honestly don’t know what I did in my lifetime to deserve this shit. I’ll talk to you later.” I shook my head and stepped into the elevator.

I couldn’t wait for the weekend to come. I needed to get out of this city for a couple of days and forget about everything that happened.

CHAPTER 22

Claire

I was sitting in my office reviewing some numbers when Christian walked in.

“Hey, Christian.” I smiled.

“Do you have a minute?”

“Of course. Sit down.” I gestured. “Shouldn’t you be at the hospital?”

“I have a couple of hours before my next surgery.” He sat down.

“So, what brings you by to see me?”

“I want to apologize.”

“For what?” My brows furrowed.

“I was the one who told Nick about you. I didn’t know you didn’t tell him. I’m sorry, Claire.”

“Don’t be, Christian. I should have told him. That’s on me, not you. I’m the one who ruined things with Nick. I moved out of my apartment. I’m staying with Shaun and Jenni until the house is done.”

“Oh, Claire.” He rubbed his forehead. “Does Nick know?”

“No. He made it very clear he never wanted to see me again. So, I’m making sure he doesn’t.”

“It’s not too late. Just talk to him and explain everything,” Christian said.

“I tried last night. He doesn’t want to hear it and doesn’t believe me. It is what it is, Christian.”

“Fuck.” He sighed. “Are you okay?”
