“L.A. is good. I really like it here.”

“Do you have any plans to visit us anytime soon?”

“It’s hard to say, Mom. I’m working crazy hours in the ER right now. My pager just went off. I have to run. I’ll call you soon.”

“Please make sure you do. We miss you, Nick.”

“I will, Mom. Bye.”

I ended the call and shook my head. Moving out of Seattle and away from them was the best thing I’d ever done. Pulling up Claire’s number, I decided to call her.

“Why hello there, Dr. Nick.”

“Hello, beautiful. How’s your day going?”

“It’s going well. I’m out running some errands.”

“That sounds fun. I was hoping to see you tonight, but one of the doctors asked if I could cover part of his shift until eleven.”

“You can always come right to my place after,” she said.

“I have to be back at the hospital by eight a.m.”

“Then I’ll set my alarm and make sure you get up.”

I chuckled. “You’ve convinced me. I’ll see you later, Claire.”

I ended the call with a smile and placed my phone in my pocket. I wanted to do something special and spend some uninterrupted time with her. I had next weekend off. Maybe Icould convince her to take a little trip with me—a trip where I would ask her to be my girlfriend.

CHAPTER 18

Claire

After running some errands, I headed back to Shaun’s house. My stomach was tied in a knot, for I didn’t know how my other brothers would react to the news. I knocked on the door, and Jenni answered, pulling me inside. She looked around to make sure Shaun wasn’t within earshot.

“Grace and I told the other girls,” she whispered. “But don’t worry. They won’t tell the boys.”

“How did they take the news?” I asked.

“They were shocked but are so excited. They’re happy you bought the Aubert’s house.”

“Claire.” Shaun smiled, walked down the stairs, and hugged me. “Listen. I was giving this a lot of thought, and I think you should be the one to tell our brothers.”

“Okay. If you think that’s best,” I said.

“I do.” He smiled. “I’m heading down there now.” He picked up Stella from the floor. “Jenni, bring Claire when you’re ready.”

“We’ll be right behind you, babe,” Jenni said. “Do you need to do a couple of shots before we head down there?” A smirk crossed her lips.

“Yes. Definitely.” I grinned.

She walked over to the bar and grabbed a shot glass and a bottle of tequila.

“Shot number one.” She smiled, handing me the glass.

I threw it down the back of my throat and handed her the glass back.

“Shot number two.”
