“What if Grandma Moretti gets so angry she throws me off the cliff?” Her eyes widened for a moment, then she broke into a soft giggle. “I’m sorry. It’s hilarious to imagine that.”

Seth smiled.

Maybe he and his brothers were being too paranoid.

They would never have been able to laugh about such things, because it was too real for them. And the fact that Clary found it hilarious to even think about Grandma Moretti hurting her should be enough to assure him that Clary was safe.

“I understand where you’re coming from, really,” Clary said.

“How?”

She blinked.

“How are you not upset or insulted about how I’m behaving?”

She bit down on her lips.

“You can tell me,” he said as they got into the elevator.

“Back at Safe Homes, when the kids grow close to me, they’re always worried that their abusers will turn their anger on me and that I will get hurt. They would beg me not to go meet with their abusers, or to run away.”

Seth sighed softly. “And I’m acting just like a child.”

“I’m saying that God has equipped me to understand why you and Oliver are so worried, so I do understand. It’s sweet, really.” She gave his hand a squeeze, and only then did Seth realize they were holding hands. “But I don’t know how to make you see my point of view. All this worrying is really all for nothing.”

He ran his hand through his hair. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m being unfair.”

Her brows puckered.

“You keep putting yourself in my shoes to understand me, but I’ve just been pushing you to function from my point of view.”

“I promise she’s not going to kidnap me.”

He poked his tongue into his cheek when they got to his car. “Then just to be safe, can I book the car service for you?” he asked and crowded her against the car instead of opening the door for her.

“What’s wrong with Uber?”

“Movement uses a special car service to transport confidential—”

“Oh, thank God I asked.” Her gaze shifted heavenward before she shot him a glare. “I’m getting my own ride.”

“What’s wrong with—”

“I’m not going to travel in an armored car.”

“I didn’t say anything about an armored car.”

“No.” She held her index finger up. “I’ve warned you before that I’m not a patient person.” She paused. “Didn’t I?” She dropped her hand. “If I didn’t, here’s your warning. I’ve hit my limit. We’re done discussing this.”

He frowned.

She flicked her brows up. “I can be bossy too.”

He laughed and nodded. “Will you call me when you’re leaving the office?”

“And I’ll text you when I reach there and when I head back to work, deal?”

“I don’t want to make deals with you.” He nodded. “But, okay.”
