Of course there was more. He swallowed a sigh and asked, “What else is she worried about?”

“You leave Grandma Moretti to me.” Clary shifted and took a step back.

She tried to, anyway.

Seth had locked her arms around his waist, so she couldn’t go anywhere.

He didn’t want her to.

He didn’t want her to deal with Grandma Moretti on her own either. What if Grandma Moretti and Edward Eolenfeld came together to kidnap Clary? They could have her locked up on one of their properties and he would never find her.

Holly had done that once. She’d taken Aldric and locked him up, saying she was sick of him disobeying her. The rest of them had spent the rest of the week worshipping at Holly’s feet and the ground she walked on just to coax her into bringing Aldric back.

“We can’t stand around here all night.”

Why not? Seth swallowed a sigh and released Clary’s arms. He drew a deep breath and braced himself before turning around.

His gaze scanned the floor around her.

No suitcase.

“Why did you come down here?” he asked.

“I suddenly remembered him.” She jerked her chin toward Hugh. “But you were a step ahead of me.”

“What were you going to do if I hadn’t been here?”

She shrugged. “Get a driver to take him to a motel.”

“You let Andrea and Ron stay in a hotel suite, but you intended to send him to a motel.”

“The cheapest one, preferably with tons of one-star ratings.”

Seth laughed, and her lips curled.

His hand moved to cup her face. He wanted to trace the pad of his thumb under her curved lips, to feel her soft skin under his. But he consciously pulled his hand back and kept it by his side.

Instead, he just stared, letting her sweet smile give him a little hope that things could work out between them.

If Edward Eolenfeld took her, would Seth be able to find her?

Zane could easily get the addresses of all the properties the Eolenfelds owned. Even if it took Seth the rest of his life, he would search through all of them for her.

But—

“Would any keys be in the ignition?” She scanned the cars in the garage. “Because if he wakes up, I can’t guarantee he won’t just grab a car and go.”

“We had a problem with Aldric doing just that, so there are no keys in the ignition.” He grabbed her arm, slightly above her elbow. “Don’t go to Grandma Moretti without me.”

Clary’s tongue darted across her lips. “Your presence wouldn’t help.”

He nodded. “I’ll drive you there. I’ll just wait outside, but don’t go on your own.”

Clary’s brows drew together. “She’s not going to hurt me.”

“You don’t know that,” he said. “You’ve always given in to them. They didn’t think it was safe for you to remain in New York, and here you are.”

“They have been nagging me about quitting Safe Homes. I didn’t quit, and they just kept nagging.”
