She grinned and was about to get up when he put a hand on her leg.
“Let me.”
“How did the meeting with Pete Laker go?”
“Fruitless.” He grabbed the bag and came back to her. “He basically implied that we should know better, but he didn’t elaborate.”
“Maybe he’s just trying to annoy Zane.” She peered into the box. “You only bought one?”
“Two. I gave one to Andrea.”
“What about you?”
He frowned. “I don’t like desserts.”
Her eyes bugged.
“Really? Not liking dessert gets this reaction?” She hadn’t even blinked at anything else he’d thrown her way.
She held the muffin out toward him. “Take a bite?”
His brows twitched.
“I can’t eat on my own.”
“You say that, but you devoured that cheesecake the last time.”
She scowled. “I didn’t devour the cheesecake.”
He pushed her hand with the muffin back toward her. “Did Pete text you again?”
Clary shook her head and glanced over at her desk. “I should just block him.”
“Don’t.” Seth couldn’t help but feel this wouldn’t be the last they would hear from Pete. “Yes, do it.”
Clary’s brows puckered.
“If he has a problem, either with Zane or myself, then he should come to us. Not harass you.”
She chuckled. “I wouldn’t really say harass.” She shrugged. “I usually don’t block people.”
“I know.”
She arched a brow as she took a bite of the muffin.
“Hugh definitely falls into the ‘harassment’ category, don’t you think?”
“I like to keep the line open so I know what the person is up to. If someone is threatening me, I’ll know when it’s escalating. If Pete’s trying to reach out to me, maybe he’ll eventually tell me why.”
“I don’t like that you got trapped into something because of Zane and me.”
“You’ve had to deal with Hugh because of me.” She shrugged, then leaned forward and whispered, “You’ve had to talk to Mr. E because of me.”
He put his fingertips on her forehead and lightly pushed her back.
“How did Pete Laker find out that we’re dating anyway?” Clary asked.
“He refused to say.” Seth brought an ankle to his knee. “The meeting was a complete waste of time.”
