Seth ended the call and sighed heavily. The conversation weighed on his mind. Between his history with the Eolenfelds and their families’ objections, was there any space for Seth and Clary to just be?

Was Aldric right about the eventuality?

CHAPTER 8

Aldric looked over his shoulder when he heard his bedroom door open. He stepped out of the bathroom with the toothbrush in his hand.

Once Seth saw that he was alive and well, he turned.

“Hey.”

His brother didn’t stop.

Aldric spat out the toothpaste and hurriedly rinsed his mouth before running out after Seth. “Hey.” He cut in front of his brother. “I didn’t mean anything I said last night.”

“Sure.” Seth sidestepped him.

Aldric sighed. “I’m serious.”

Seth spun around. “So what was that?”

“I was just testing her.”

His brother’s brows twitched. “Sure. Whatever you say.”

“I know you’re not a Scrooge.” After all, the only reason he had several million sitting in the bank was because Seth had continued to transfer money to his account through the years. “I know—”

“Save it,” Seth snapped.

“Are you really angry?”

Seth had never snapped at him like that before. No matter what Aldric did, and he’d done a lot of stupid things.

“Stay away from her. That’s all I ask.”

“Gosh. You really care about her.”

“Yeah, and you and Elton can’t even be bothered to be civil.” Seth shook his head. “I thought you guys would always have my back, but I guess I was wrong.”

Aldric’s jaw dropped.

“Stay. Away. From. Her.” Then his brother turned and left.

“Seth,” he said after regaining his composure, but the door had already swung closed.

Aldric cursed. He truly was just testing Clary. He didn’t think Seth would get so upset, especially since she passed the test!

If he’d known it would upset Seth this much, he wouldn’t have done it.

Had Clary broken up with Seth because of what he said? But she’d defended him.

Then again, women—fickle-minded creatures.

Aldric rubbed a hand over his mouth.

Right now, Seth was probably going to check on Elton. Because no matter how much they annoyed him, Seth would still do the dutiful thing and make sure they hadn’t tripped over themselves on the way home.

So … he probably had like two minutes to fix things.
