Zane pushed himself up on his elbows. He looked around. His gaze landed on Seth, then shifted to Clary. Eventually, he nodded. “I got it.”

Clary took a step forward, then closed her eyes, swaying.

Seth immediately wrapped his arm around her to steady her. “So it does affect you.”

“Grandma Moretti and Mr. E always made me drink with them at home.” She drew another deep breath. “Better to learn how to drink than risk being drunk outside. Just give me a second.”

Seth slipped his arm under her knees and scooped her up.

She gasped and clutched his shirt. “Gosh.” She blinked twice. “I thought I fell over. I’m fine, really.”

He strode up the stairs. “I like having an excuse to hold you.”

Clary nodded, and her body melted against his as she rested her head against his shoulder. She closed her eyes and rubbed her cheek against him, as if she wanted to burrow into him.

Such a simple action, and it made him want to invent a time loop machine so he could relive the moment over and over again.

“I just realized I haven’t seen your room,” she said. “You’re always in mine.”

“I’m not sure you’ll remember it even if we see it now.”

“I’m fine, Seth. I’m not drunk. Slightly tipsy, maybe.”

“I was worried when Elton goaded you into drinking,” he said. Before that, Clary had stuck to the hot chocolate she asked Andrea to bring over. “Never would’ve guessed you hold your liquor so well.”

“It’s a dangerous world out there for a woman.”

“And you allowed yourself to get tipsy in a room full of men.”

“You’re here.” She rubbed her cheek against his shoulder again, and something so strong hit his heart that he had to pause to take a deep breath. “Did you have fun?”

He nodded, because he still couldn’t speak.

“I hope you did. I want you to be happy.”

“Clary.”

“Hmm?”

“You need to stop talking.”

“Am I annoying you again? I didn’t even talk about Jesus.”

His lips curled.

“Goodnight, Seth.”

He’d just gotten to her bedroom door. He hadn’t even set her down. How was she so sure that he would? Was she this trusting with everyone? “You’re never drinking again without me around. You hear me?”

Clary mumbled something.

Seth only caught the word ‘bossy.’

He set her down on the bed, pulled off her shoes, and covered her with the blanket. Sitting on the bed, he brushed a stray stand of hair from her face. “Too bad. You’re stuck with me.”

He gave her a peck on the forehead. I really want to keep her. Even as those words surfaced in his head, Seth couldn’t help thinking how ridiculous it was that he actually thought God could hear him.

But even if it was a one in a trillion chance …
