“Oh.”

“I won’t let anything happen to you, I promise.”

She frowned and tipped her head to the side. “How do you sleep if you always have to keep an ear out at night?”

“I’m a light sleeper.”

“Still …”

Seth cracked a smile. “There you go, worrying about others again.”

She narrowed her eyes. “Ron knows me so well, doesn’t he?”

His reaction mirrored hers.

She patted the edge of the bed. “You’re always taking care of your brothers. Someone should take care of you, right?”

“So what?” Seth strode over and sat on the bed. “Should we take shifts? You stay up for four hours, then I’ll stay up the next four.”

“If it’d help you sleep better, I’m up for it.”

Seth smiled at the sweater she was wearing. “Do you want another one?”

“Why?” She lifted the sweater to her nose. “Do I stink?”

“You always smell good.”

“It’s my shampoo. I can buy some for you if you like it.” She laughed softly. “I’d like to visit the mansion to get my own sweaters.”

“Why? What’s wrong with mine?”

She gave her hands a shake, and the sleeves dropped down, covering her hands and dangling below her fingertips. “Besides this? Nothing.”

He laughed once. “You look good in it.”

Clary pushed the sleeves back up her arms while Seth peered over at the laptop screen.

“Still searching for information on Pete Laker?”

She shook her head. “Just going through the things I have to do on Monday.” She exhaled heavily.

“May I?” Seth put his hand on the laptop, but didn’t pull it over until she nodded. “Looks like you and Andrea planned everything.”

“Except what I should say.” She licked her lips. “What if I mess up? What if I—”

“Someone told me that worrying about everything that can go wrong doesn’t help anything.” He pushed the laptop back toward her. “You need a desk.”

“No. Don’t buy anything else.”

Seth stood and extended his hand toward her. “I have a surprise for you.”

Her eyes widened. “A surprise?” She closed the laptop and put her hand in his.

Immediately, his fingers closed around hers. He continued staring at their hands even as he tugged her to her feet.

“Is something wrong?” she asked.

He smiled and shook his head. “Come on.” He intertwined their fingers, then led her out of the room.
