“You don’t see that?”

She rolled her eyes. “I helped him on a case. He feels like he owes me one. I already told him I was just doing my job.”

“Do you trust him?” Seth asked.

“Ron has good instincts. We were working on another case when he asked for my help to check in on his sister and nephew. All because he thought his sister sounded off when they were on the phone.”

“Why didn’t he find out earlier?”

“He and his sister haven’t been in touch for a really long time. He opposed her marriage, and she moved away. That was the first call she’d made to him since.”

“Do you trust his feeling about Gavin Ressler, then?”

Her chest rose. “He warned me—before everything happened—to be careful of Ressler.”

“I’ll take care of the DNA test. In the meantime, you have me—and the angels—to keep you safe.”

“Can I do that?”

“Do what?”

Her soft gaze roamed across his face. “Let you protect me.”

“I don’t understand.”

She cracked a smile. “I know that Grandma Moretti and Mr. E are always watching over me. If I get into any serious trouble, I know I can ultimately go to them. But I’ve always made sure to avoid that. I just hate troubling or worrying them—or anyone else.”

“You can and you will.”

“How bossy.”

Seth stood. “Take a break. I’ll come get you when dinner’s here.” He headed out of the room after Clary nodded. He was about to give the detective a call when he noticed Zane downstairs.

“Did you talk to her?” his brother asked.

“She doesn’t want to involve Edward Eolenfeld, and I don’t want to force her. I can pay for the DNA test. How do we arrange for it to be sent to a private lab?”

“The easiest thing to do would be to go talk to the police commissioner.”

Seth grinned. “Who happens to be her new assistant’s father.” Instead of calling Woznick, he sent a text to Andrea, requesting her father’s contact information so he could get him to run a DNA test on the burned body.

“And the good news is,” Zane continued, “Ron Woznick cares a lot more for her than she does for him.”

He sighed.

“I thought you’d want to know.”

“You don’t trust her.”

“I don’t trust anyone,” his brother said.

“Just try to be nice, okay? She’s … important to me.”

“Haven’t I been?”

Seth blew out a breath. “There’s something else.”

“You’re finally going to tell me how you two met?”
