“Are you okay?”

She heard his question, heard his voice bouncing around in her head, but she couldn’t seem to pull herself together enough to answer him.

Seth didn’t ask her again. He scooped her up in his arms, just as Andrea and Ron got to their feet.

She blinked and scanned her surroundings.

“Help Hugh,” Seth said to Ron, then strode toward the stairs.

They were halfway down when Zane, Oliver, and Aldric burst into the stairwell. Questions echoed around them as they made their way out of the building.

Clary’s head spun with the cacophony of questions and the noise from the crowd of curious onlookers who had gathered outside the apartment building. She dropped her head against Seth’s shoulder.

“Clary.”

She could hear the panic in his voice as he put her down. “I’m okay.” She leaned slightly away from him and tugged at the Kevlar vest as she suddenly felt how heavy and constricting it was. “I can’t breathe properly.”

Seth immediately removed the vest and tossed it back to Zane. “Are you hurt?”

“How could I be?” As she said that, a well of frustration exploded. “I was the one with the vest on and you used your body to shield me?” she shouted. “Are you out of your mind?”

Seth laughed and rested his forehead against hers. “Clary Fiore, I just saved your life.”

“Oh, right,” she said, softer this time.

“Ressler!”

She jerked her head toward Ron, who’d just taken off running. Zane and Andrea immediately followed. “Whoa!” she shouted when Aldric and Oliver started after Zane. She twisted to look at the trio who were sprinting down the other side of the road.

Seth left her with a paramedic and grabbed his brothers’ shirts. “Don’t even think about it.”

“But—”

“Hi,” Clary said to the paramedic. She hadn’t even realized she was in the back of an ambulance. “I’m fine.”

“Just a quick check and I’ll let you go.”

“Are you hurt anywhere?” Seth asked when he got back to Clary.

“No.” Clary grabbed the paramedic’s arm. “Please check him.” She got up and dusted off her pants as she stared across the road where the trio had headed.

They were nowhere to be seen.

Aldric and Oliver gave her a head-to-toe scan. “Are you okay?” Oliver asked first, while Aldric echoed the same question a micro-second later.

She nodded. “I’m good. I’m good. Still trying to process what happened, but I’m good.”

“You might want to go down to EB Co.” Seth put his hand on her back. “The bomb squad is searching for possible bombs after receiving an anonymous report.”

“Was Hugh’s—” She looked around. “Where’s Hugh? He got out, right?”

“He did.” Aldric walked over to peer into the ambulance. “I saw Andrea dragging him out by the sleeve.”

“Gavin didn’t get him again, right?” Clary said and glanced across the street again.

Oliver shook his head. “None of them was dragging anyone. Maybe Hugh took off after them.”

Clary put her hand on her hips. “Was the bomb on Hugh real?”
