She blew out a breath.

“What’s wrong now?” Andrea asked.

“I feel kind of bad about leaving Grandma Moretti and Mr. E on their own for Christmas.”

“Oh.” Andrea’s brows rose. “My parents used to fight over where we’d go for Christmas.” She shook her head. “You should make the decision now and stick with it.”

“I gave Seth my word that I’d put him first.”

“And you’re regretting it?”

“No.” She bit down on her lips. “I really want to spend Christmas with him anyway, and I wouldn’t want his brothers to be upset by Mr. E’s presence. But doesn’t it make me kind of ungrateful?”

“I’m sure they’ll understand.”

She nodded.

“And as Seth predicted,” Andrea continued, “a lot of people are claiming that they had erroneous charges and are demanding refunds too.”

“Just send them the template reply for now,” Clary said.

Seth had warned her beforehand that this would happen, so she’d decided to only process refunds for those whose complaints had already been lodged and investigated by the independent review team.

“I’ve already spoken with the review team,” Clary continued. “They’ll stay and continue to investigate the new claims.”

“They’re so expensive.”

“Hugh’s watches will pay for it.”

“Are you sure you’re not going to get in trouble for putting those up for auction?” Andrea asked. “You could be charged with theft.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’d love to see Hugh try and do that.”

“You have a lot of faith in Mr. E. He does seem to dote on you more than his own children and grandchildren.”

“No, he doesn’t.”

“I think you could cause Hugh to be written out of Edward Eolenfeld’s will.”

“No, I couldn’t.” Clary smiled. “Everyone thinks I can, but I know Mr. E. He won’t write them out. He seems to have something planned, but he won’t write them out completely. He loves his family, and … he feels responsible for the way they are today.”

“Why does he dote on you so much, though? Because your parents died while working for him?”

Clary closed her eyes for a moment to push the thoughts of her parents lying in pools of blood out of her mind.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have mentioned that.”

“No, I’m okay.” She blew out a breath. “No. Mrs. E doted on me even before that.” She shrugged. “God’s favor, maybe?”

“Hmm.” Andrea gave her a scrutinizing scan. “Maybe because you’re just a lot more decent than his own blood,” she said as they stepped into the elevator. “That was a good idea, by the way. Extending loans to the affected customers whose credit ratings were ruined.”

“It was one of the proposals from the staff.” Clary had announced that she was going to reform the bank and looked forward to suggestions and proposals. She’d set up a dedicated email address for that and started receiving email before the work day was over.

So she’d gone through all the proposals she received, deciding which went into the trash folder, which would be considered, and which were brilliant.

“I’m still getting quite a few calls from different news outlets, all requesting interviews or comments on the refunds we’ve processed,” Andrea said.

Clary laughed softly.
