Seth read through the page and closed the book. The chapter was on how electrical systems were laid out in older buildings. A coincidence?

“Found something?”

Seth looked at the yellow pieces of paper that seemed to have been torn off a notepad. “What do those say?”

“Basically they’re just Tamara complaining about Clary and Andrea, and also saying that she would do anything to help him.”

He poked his tongue into his cheek. “Didn’t you say he destroyed all his letters in prison?”

“I thought he did.”

“Why did he keep this? And stuff it in here.” Seth threw the book down on the table. “I think it’s a decoy. He’s trying to draw our attention to EB Co.”

“But he’s actually targeting elsewhere?” Ron rubbed a hand over his mouth. “Clary’s grandmother is here, right? She’s staying at the Bay mansion. Andrea sent me a text to say we’re checking out and moving into the mansion.”

Seth kneaded his neck. He would offer to have Grandma Moretti stay with him, but his apartment was out of rooms and he couldn’t possibly put her in with his brothers.

Maybe Aldric? Though annoying to him, Aldric had proven that his charms worked on many, many women.

But Aldric’s apartment was always a mess. If he weren’t so rarely home, their part-time maid probably would have quit because of his apartment.

“Have you met her grandmother?” Ron asked.

Seth nodded, already dreading what Ron would say.

He knew Clary wasn’t interested in Ron, but Seth would be the first to admit he was petty enough to be upset to hear that Grandma Moretti had been wholly approving of Ron.

“Quite a character, isn’t she?” Ron laughed once. “She tried really hard to make sure I understood that she didn’t want Clary dating a cop.”

Seth smiled.

“So a CEO didn’t make the cut either?” Ron asked.

“She wanted Clary to choose between her and me.”

Ron’s brows rose. “And you’re still together? Secretly?”

“Clary handled it.”

“Huh.”

Seth didn’t bother to explain that it was only a temporary consent. “You and Andrea stay at the hotel. I’ll talk to Clary and let her decide if she wants her grandmother at the hotel or maybe staying with us.”

“If I were you, I’d pray that she says the hotel.”

Seth laughed once. “Why didn’t you make the cut?”

“Law enforcement is a tough job—even tougher on the spouse, apparently. Why didn’t you make the cut?”

“She thinks I’m only after Clary to get to the Eolenfelds.”

“Don’t you have enough money already?”

“I have a history with the Eolenfelds,” he said and got up.

“Are you going to EB Co.?” Ron followed. “Drop me off.”

Seth stuffed his hands into the pockets of his pants. “I always thought detectives didn’t make much. How are you able to afford to take time off to be here?”
