Seth took two steps, then leaned back against the door to watch her move around in his sweater. It looked so much better on her, even when it almost covered her shorts and the sleeves fell past her hands.

She grabbed her phone. After a few taps, her brows drew together. “Is this Elton’s number?” She held the phone up for him, because he’d already made his way over to her.

You cannot trust Seth Anderson.

“No. It isn’t,” Seth said. He took out his phone and entered the number into the keypad.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling the person—whoever he or she was.” He was about to tap on the call button when Clary grabbed his forearm.

She released him the moment she sensed his muscles tensing. “I’m sorry.”

“I don’t like you apologizing for that.” He should be the one doing so, not her.

Why was he still reacting this way, even to Clary?

His body never tensed when he reached out to her, and he’d found himself wanting to do that all the time. If he could, he would spend every second with her.

Yet her sudden touches still caused him to tense up.

What would it take for his body to stop reacting like this? To get over the fear and sickening punch in his gut whenever Holly Eolenfeld came close to him?

Time?

For over a decade, he and his brothers had been out from under Holly’s roof. How much more time would he need?

Would Clary still be here then? Would she have the patience to deal with the mess that he was?

“Hey, are you still here?”

He blinked once.

“I’ll try and remember.”

He arched a brow.

“Not to apologize when you tense up from my touch.”

Seth drew in a breath. “I’m sorry.”

“I don’t like you apologizing for it either,” she said. “You can’t help it.”

He took her hand and grazed his thumb across her knuckles again.

“I’m only worried that every time I touch you, it reminds you of Holly.”

“It doesn’t.” How should he put it? I like you to touch me? That sounded creepy.

Maybe he should just apologize again for being a mess.

Seth sat on the bed and took her hand, then tugged her down next to him. “I don’t tense from your touch because I’m thinking about Holly. It’s just …”

“A reaction.”

He nodded slowly. “I don’t know why.”

Her brows twitched, and she bit down on her lips.
