I’ll send Detective Murphy over, but give me your word that you won’t say anything. Promise you won’t answer any questions.

Oliver turned to Seth, who was frowning as well. Okay. He typed and sent it before Seth could stop him.

“Oliver.”

“She must have a reason for doing this. I trust her. Don’t you?”

“I do, but …” Seth looked at Oliver. “I’m not sure I trust you to keep your mouth shut.”

“I will. If she has a plan, it means she’s coming back, right? And if keeping my mouth shut is what she needs, then I’ll do it. I swear. I promise I won’t say a word.”

Another text message came in. This time, it was information on a lawyer, followed by another text message. He’s on the way.

Oliver made a face. “I guess she doesn’t trust me either.”

I’ll call Detective Murphy soon. I’m just going to ask him to cuff you and bring you to the station. I won’t say anything, so please, don’t you say anything either.

“And Detective Murphy is going to comply?” Seth asked.

Oliver repeated that question to Clary.

If he needs a directive from above, I can get that too. Just, please, Oliver, don’t say anything.

Seth poked his tongue into his cheek, and Oliver typed the question he knew his brother wanted to ask. And you’ll come home?

Again, the reply took forever.

Forever and ever and ever and …

Yes. Until then, take care of him for me. Oliver grinned and pushed the phone all the way into Seth’s face.

His brother pushed his hand away, laughing. Half a laugh. Kind of.

Well, it was better than the shell Seth had been.

“Now will you release me? I want to charge my Switch before Detective Murphy gets here.” Oliver scratched his head while Seth unlocked the cuff. “Should I pack a bag?”

“You’re not going camping, Oliver.”

Andrea squared her shoulders and blew out a breath outside Holly’s room.

Clary was nervous. She was worried that this was just another of her stupid ideas and wondered if she should hit the pause button to pray about it. She was also concerned that Andrea might get hurt though Uncle David and two wellness center employees would be stationed outside the room.

In the end, Andrea sent Clary away. Because Clary’s growing anxiety was going to mess with her performance.

Every interrogation was a performance. Often, she had to take the role of an understanding, compassionate detective who was on the suspect’s side. When in reality, all she wanted to do was punch the suspect.

Sometimes, not often, she got to play the bad cop. Those interrogations, she enjoyed.

This time, she had to play the detective—without actually declaring that she was one. Because impersonating a law enforcement officer was a crime, and they didn’t need to give Holly any ammunition for future attacks.

“Are you sure you’re up for this?” Uncle David asked. “You can tell Clary no. She won’t be upset.”

“I know.” Andrea shook her head. “I don’t know. I think everything everyone says about Holly has gotten to me.”

Clary and Uncle David had given her a rundown of how much of a monster Holly was.
