There was a round wooden plank over the well. The plank appeared worn, and she wasn’t sure if it would crumble away at her touch.

It didn’t, and it was a lot heavier than she expected.

Her other hand went to the edge of the plank, and something sharp pricked her hand, causing her to drop it.

“You should’ve just waited for me.” Uncle David huffed and grabbed the plank. He threw it aside and shot her a smug glare. “Tell me again how Pilates makes you strong.”

She ignored him.

Putting her hands on the edge of the well, she leaned forward, but Uncle David immediately grabbed her shirt and pulled her back.

“Are you trying to kill yourself?”

“I’m trying to get a better look.”

“It’s an old well. It’s made of stone, but you can’t assume it’ll hold up when you lean your entire weight on it.”

She blew out a breath.

“And it’s so deep. Do you have a flashlight? What are you trying to see?”

“There should be a flashlight on the plane, right?”

Uncle David fished one out of his pocket.

She glared at him.

“I figured I should be prepared.”

“Thank you.” She wanted to take it from him, but he moved it out of her reach.

“Be careful.” He clicked the flashlight on and shone it down the well. “Don’t put your whole weight on it.” He shifted the angle of the light. “I can’t see anything.”

“Isn’t there a bucket or something we can throw down to dredge through the water?”

“What are you trying to find?”

“I’m hoping there’s nothing but water.”

“Did you watch a video that cursed you? How many more days do you have?”

“Uncle David!”

“I told you I was imagining the worst.”

“And your worst is that the ghost from The Ring cursed me?” She put her hands on her hips. “If there’s nothing in the water, I’ll tell you what’s going on.”

Uncle David’s eyes narrowed. “There’s equipment for that.” He took out his phone.

“Are you calling Mr. E?”

“No,” he said in a bored tone. “I have his limitless credit card, though.”

Clary laughed softly, and Uncle David grinned.

“So now we wait?” Clary asked when Uncle David ended the call.

“Now we wait.”
