But this?

“Clary?” Uncle David shifted back to look at her.

She sucked in a breath, but she couldn’t make herself say anything.

“It’s okay.” He turned, keeping an arm around her shoulders, and led her forward. “It’s going to be okay.”

Clary shook her head.

No. It wasn’t. How could it be?

CHAPTER 17

“This is amazing,” Clary said and rested back against the soft bed and the dozens of cushions on it.

Seth grinned and tucked her hair behind her ear.

After her talk with Holly, Clary had emerged from the wellness center with a smile and had repeatedly assured them that everything was fine. Holly had apparently tried to convince Clary that she was the victim and Seth and his brothers were the monsters, but she’d failed horribly.

Then Holly had gotten upset, and Clary left.

She insisted that was it.

Seth couldn’t help but feel there was more, but Clary simply reassured him every time he asked. Even Zane wasn’t sure. His brother felt everything was too easy, and things with Holly were never easy.

But then again, perhaps they just expected too much of her.

Holly had gotten their attention, and Clary had even gone to speak to her. But realistically, what could Holly plot inside the walls of the wellness center? She’d already accomplished more than usual, getting access to the Internet, getting Pete and Remo on her side. And she wasn’t even able to control Remo completely.

Perhaps it was simply a bid for attention, which Holly did all the time. She needed attention, needed people to fall at her feet and worship her. She’d tried and failed to get Clary to do just that.

“I can’t believe you got this set up so quickly,” Clary continued.

Seth shoved his thoughts aside. This morning, Clary had prepped tons of food. She suggested they steal away to his apartment building and have a picnic in the empty apartment. She thought they could watch a movie and laze the day away.

Lazing the day away had never been an option in his mind. He always had much better things to do, but it sounded like a brilliant idea when she brought it up. But he wanted her comfortable.

“I didn’t want you to have to sit on the hard floor the whole day,” he said while she snuggled up against him and looked up at the canopy above them. “It’s actually from a glamping company.”

A large white canopy took up much of the space in the empty apartment. The apartment that Seth had set aside for Oliver, for the day when his youngest brother solved his sleepwalking issue.

“Glamping?”

“Glamorous Camping.”

And that came with a king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets and over a dozen soft pink and blue cushions. Twirled around the top of the canopy were fairy lights, and around the tent were red and white roses that led all the way up to the front door.

“And romantic. Let me guess,” Clary said. “Oliver suggested it?”

“He saw it on Instagram.” His youngest brother had been sending him whatever romantic ideas he spotted on Instagram.

Clary chuckled. “Where’s your projector? What movie should we watch?”

“You should choose. You’ve already watched Star Wars with me.”

“I don’t know.” She bit down on her lips, then released them with a pop. “Let’s scroll through Netflix and we’ll see.”

He nodded. “Wait here.” He leaned over and gave her a peck on the forehead. “I’ll go grab the projector.”
